Course Description

This course covers the skills and knowledge required to perform basic editing functions in relation to screen content

1 Prepare Source Materials for Edit

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Clarify technical and creative requirements for production and online editing in consultation with relevant production personnel
1.2 Obtain and label source materials and keep in a safe, clean location with appropriate documentation
1.3 Organise transfer of source materials to appropriate medium where necessary
1.4 Check that sufficient storage and memory is available to meet content resolution requirements
1.5 Assess source materials for technical and creative quality
1.6 Digitise content according to specified formats ensuring compatibility with available software and hardware
1.7 Syncronise and organise uncut images and sound in preparation for evaluation and editing
1.8 Consult relevant production personnel, finalise shot list for the edit and method to log them

2 Log Content for Editing

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Check and maintain editing facilities and ensure appropriate settings in place
2.2 Obtain required editing consumable materials to meet editing requirements
2.3 Load source materials onto appropriate editing facility, ensuring correct image and sound is ready for use
2.4 Identify required shots and sequences from source materials and catalogue them
2.5 Log selected edits with reference to time codes and shot descriptions according to industry procedures
2.6 Use a batch digitise list to digitise selected sequences
2.7 Create edit decision lists (EDLs) according to instructions of personnel
2.8 Organise and save selected materials according to editing requirements
2.9 Finalise logging sheets and submit EDLs to relevant production personnel

Note that the 10 weeks of this class will have a break in the middle of the semester. The first 5 weeks will be delivered in Weeks 1 to 5 of the University TAFE curriculum calendar year, with the remaining 5 weeks to be delivered between Weeks 12 to 16 towards the end of semester
