Course Description
This course describes the knowledge and skills required to participate in, establish and lead a range of informal and formal groups in a variety of settings.

Details of Learning Activities
The learning activities that you will undertake are:
• Class discussions – these will cover various aspects of planning and conducting group activities for various target groups, as well as the steps involved (Resourcing, conducting and evaluating the process), Human Rights issues, how to write a report, how to give an oral presentation
• Questions and answers – relating to human rights issues, the steps involved in creating a program for a targeted audience/group
You will also be required to undertake independent studies.
This course and the associated learning activities will be supported and complemented by RMIT’s learning management tool "Blackboard”.
Teaching Schedule
This course will be delivered over six weeks during the first semester.
Week 1 - Introduction to the course, Human rights issues and documents, types of groups, why work in groups? addressing resourcing issues
Week 2 - Coordinating the group planning purpose to address the identified needs of the target audience, networking, including everyone in the process, designing successful strategies
Week 3 - Responding to conflict that may arise, resources, conflict resolution, etc
Week 4 - Evaluating the process including tools for feedback, analysis of feedback, writing a report,
Week 5 - Presentations - how to present findings to various different audiences (eg board, government, etc)
Week 6 - Group presentations

Overview of Assessment
Assessment for this course is based on a prepared activity for a targeted group of young people, which will include a group class presentation and a written report due at the end of the course. During class time students will also submit prepared question and answer sheets.
Assessment Tasks
For this course you will be required to complete two assessment tasks:
• Prepared answer and question sheets - You will receive one at the end of each class. Answered in class, you will be asked to answer 10 questions that will address the teachings of each class.
• Group presentation delivered in two halves: a group oral presentation due in the last week and a written report due two weeks after the teaching period finishes .

This program in delivered in accordance with competency-based assessment. The grades are as follows:

- NYC: Not Yet Competent
- DNS: Did Not Submit for assessment
