Course Description

This course describes the knowledge and skills required to communicate effectively with young people (aged 12-25) in work roles with a specific focus on young people.

Performance Criteria:

1  Listen to the young person to gain understanding of their experiences.
2  Foster communication exchanges that supports the development of trust and rapport.
3  Process information about the young persons situation from their perspective.
4  Use a range of appropriate communication strategies to engage with young people .
5  Consider cultural sensitivities in communication techniques and adapt style and language to accommodate different cultural values and practices.
6  Maintain young person’s confidentiality in the context that the young person is the primary stakeholder.
 

Element:

Reflect understanding of youth cultures, sub cultures and development

Performance Criteria:

1  Take into account youth culture, sub cultures and development of the young person in all actions and decisions.
2  Evaluate issues in relation to young person’s culture and modify approaches appropriately.
3  Select activities and resources to promote awareness, respect and value of diversity.
4  Establish guidelines that are relevant to the culture and background of the young person.
5. Assess the impact of own cultural values, cultural lens and ethnocentrism in youth work.

Work with the young person as the focus

1  Apply youth centred practices when working with young people.
2  Respect the rights needs and responsibilities of the young person.
3  Convey worker rights and responsibilities as necessary.
4  Establish a professional relationship and boundary expectations with the young person.
5  Recognise, and manage power inequities in the professional relationship.
6  Apply principles of ethical decision-making in working with young people.

You will undertake a number of learning activities in this course including:

Teaching Schedule

This course is delivered over 6 weeks in the beginning of semester one. It is clustered and delivered with the course CHCYTH402B Work effectively with young people in the youth context

Week 1 - Introduction to the course, Code of Ethics, an introduction to developmental theories
Week 2 - Your strengths, who are young people?, how does this relate to youth workers? Self-awareness
Week 3 - Developmental theories and practice frameworks
Week 4 - Communication, confidentiality, youth law, policy development,
Week 5 - Types of youth work, values, building rapport, rights and responsibilities of workers and young people,
Week 6 - Revision of frameworks and theories

You will be provided with the resources and tools for learning in this course. These resources will also be available through Blackboard. You will also have access to the resources in the library.


Overview of Assessment

Each week you should write a paragraph or more (at least 100 words) on the following questions.

Week 1:
Code of ethics – Explore your thoughts one of the principles we discussed today.

Week 2:
Describe the cultures of your youth. How has this shaped you, how have you changed?

Week 3:
Which of the other frameworks or theories resonated with you the most and why?

Week 4:
Which question in todays’ quiz surprised you the most and why?

Week 5:
When you envisage yourself as a youth worker what kind of work do you see yourself doing and why?

Week 6:
What do you see as the key components to engage effectively with young people?


Assessment will also take place during your time on Work Placement.  You will be required to complete 3 case studies which demonstrate your capacity to engage effectively with young people.  These will be set by the teacher and given to you in class.
 


Assessment Tasks

As per the over-view of assessment

Each week you should write a paragraph or more (at least 100 words) on the following questions.

Also throughout placement you will need to complete 3 case studies which demonstrate your capacity to engage effectively with young people. Directed questions will be provided during class time.


1. Talk about a young person’s whose values and culture differed to yours and/or others around the young person.
2. Talk about a young person who you really clicked with

3. Talk about a young person who was having issues within the service.

This program in delivered in accordance with competency-based assessment. The grades are as follows:
