Course Description

This course describes the knowledge and skills required to work in the youth work context.  The course focuses on the historical and contemporary youth sector practice and understanding of the current status of young people.

Performance Criteria:

1  Apply knowledge of youth contexts to youth work practice.
2  Identify legal frameworks which impact on context of youth work.
3  Research, maintain and apply models and frameworks of youth work in a variety of youth work contexts.
4  Develop a comprehensive understanding of the youth sector.

Element:

Apply understanding of the social, historical, economic, legal and political contexts of young people.

Performance Criteria:

1  Assess and respond to the needs of young people within the context of their experiences.
2  Research, analyse and maintain up to date knowledge and awareness of the social, political , economic and legal contexts of young people.
3  Research, analyse and apply understanding of youth policy in practices of youth work.
4  Apply understanding of the historical and cultural constructs of youth and the changing context of young people.

Element:

Work with understanding of the impact of values in determining the approach to working with young people.

Performance Criteria:

1  Identify, and reflect on own values and experiences which may impact on approaches to youth work.
2  Work with awareness of organisation values.
3  Match interventions and supports appropriate to the young person’s own values.

Element:

Work within the core values and practice frameworks of youth work.

Performance Criteria:

1  Assess core youth work practice values to ensure supports and interventions are young person-centred.
2  Apply practice frameworks to maximise support for the young person as a unique individual.
3  Demonstrate support for the young person’s rights and safety including access and equity of services.

Teaching Schedule

This course is delivered over 6 weeks in the beginning of semester one. It is clustered and delivered with CHCYTH402B Work effectively with young people in the youth context

  • Week 1 - Introduction to the course, Code of Ethics, an introduction to developmental theories
  • Week 2 - Your strengths, who are young people?, how does this relate to youth workers? self-awareness
  • Week 3 - Developmental theories and practice frameworks
  • Week 4 - Communication, confidentiality, youth law, policy development,
  • Week 5 - Types of youth work, values, building rapport, rights and responsibilities of workers and young people,
  • Week 6 - Revision of frameworks and theories

Overview of Assessment

Each week you should write a paragraph or more (at least 100 words) on the following questions.

Week 1:
Code of ethics – Explore your thoughts one of the principles we discussed today.

Week 2:
Describe the cultures of your youth. How has this shaped you, how have you changed?

Week 3:
Which of the other frameworks or theories resonated with you the most and why?

Week 4:
Which question in todays’ quiz surprised you the most and why?

Week 5:
When you envisage yourself as a youth worker what kind of work do you see yourself doing and why?

Week 6:
What do you see as the key components to engage effectively with young people?


Throughout placement you will need to complete 3 case studies which demonstrate your capacity to engage effectively with young people. Directed questions will be provided during classtime.

1. Talk about a young person’s whose values and culture differed to yours and/or others around the young person.

2. Talk about a young person who you really clicked with.

3. Talk about a young person who was having issues within the service.
