Course Description

The ability to safely undertake basic repairs and maintenance of technical equipment used within the live production industry is a skill which is highly valued by employers.
In this course you will learn to select and attach  flexible cords and plugs to electrical equipment for connection to supplies up to 230V a.c. and perform safety tests as necessary.

1.1

Condition and ratings under which the flexible cords and plugs are to operate is determined from requirements and in consultation with appropriate personnel followed by written instruction.

4. Locate and repair fault(s) in attached flexible cord(s) and plug(s).

Performance Criteria:

4.1
Electrical equipment and attached flexible cord(s) and plug(s) are isolated, where necessary, in accordance with established procedures.
4.2
Other OHS policies and procedures are followed.
4.3
Visual checks of the attached flexible cord(s) and plug(s) are carried out in accordance with established procedures to detect any abnormal or obvious damage or fault.
4.4
Fault(s) in attached flexible cord(s) and plug(s) are confirmed and components to be replaced are determined and details recorded in accordance with established procedures.
4.5
Fault(s) in attached flexible cord(s) and plug(s) are repaired in accordance with established procedures, where necessary.
4.6
Approval is obtained in accordance with established procedures from appropriate personnel, before any contingencies are implemented.

Out of-class self-directed learner activities for this course include but are not limited to: private research at selected websites and revision of notes to reinforce classroom content. These activities will be monitored and assessed during class through question/answer sessions.


Teaching Schedule

1 Focus: In this first class you will learn what is covered in the course and the assessment requirements. You will also learn about the Unit of Competency Element 1. Plan and prepare to attach flexible cord(s) and plug(s), Element 2, Attach flexible cord(s), Element 4 Locate and repair fault(s) in attached flexible cord(s) and plug(s).
You will learn how inspect faulty cords and plugs, plan for their re attachment and attached a cord and/or plug.
Material required for each class:
Each student must bring to class One clear 240 volt 10 amp. three pin mains power plug, One clear 240 volt line 10 amp. three pin mains power socket, 2 metres (or length as required) of three core 240 volt mains flex, sidecutters, screwdriver to match the connector screws.
Includes: Discussion of underpinning theory, practical demonstrations and practical assessment activities.
 
2 Focus: In this first class you will learn about what the course is about, what the assessment requirements are. Overview of Assessment

Assessment is ongoing throughout this course and will involve consistent demonstration of practical tasks and testing of underpinning theory knowledge.


Assessment Tasks

This unit of competency is assessed in accordance with competency-based assessment. To demonstrate competency in this course you will need to complete the following assessment to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of the assessment task.

Assessment: Individual open-book practical assessment task: 240 volt connector attachment and testing.
1. Connector Attachment
Each student will connect a male & female 240 volt connector to a length of three-core flexible cable. For this task you will be assessed both on your ability to attach the connectors as well as your ability to plan the task (obtain all necessary materials and tools).
2. Connector Testing
Each student will use both a multimeter and a portable appliance tester to test for electrical safety the 240 volt power cable that was constructed during this course and report on cable status.


Opportunities for this assessment will be available in classes 2 and 3.
