Course Description

In this course you work as a member of a production team to produce two short, multi-camera television productions. After preparatory work on storyboarding and script preparation, you will learn to set up and operate a vision mixing console in a television studio. Working collaboratively with your team, you will also set up the studio and cameras along with the audio and lighting equipment.

Liaise with relevant production personnel to confirm production requirements and recommend creative solutions where appropriate

4.Prepare contingency plans for unscripted effects and processes that may arise during recording of productions in consultation with director or producer

1. Select vision mixing methods to achieve creative and technical output for productions
2.Negotiate alternative strategies with relevant production personnel where designated effects and processes are beyond the capability of available equipment
3.Check that identified effects and processes are fully functional and monitors are working within specifications
4.Check and assign or route required vision sources so they are accessible on the vision mixing unit and can be previewed on monitoring equipment
5.Identify and note key reference points and complexities requiring special attention during production
6.Ensure equipment is tested and confirm it is capable of meeting production requirements

Performance Criteria:

1. Ensure that actions throughout productions are correctly identified on scripts or production schedules
2.Communicate with relevant production personnel throughout the mixing process to achieve the desired effect
3.If appropriate, preview sources throughout the production process and put to air on cue
4.Respond promptly to cues received from relevant production personnel and ensure consistency of timing
5.Perform planned transitions between vision sources, reassign sources as and when required, and perform effects transitions to ensure production requirements are met
6.Assign effects and processes to appropriate storage device
7.React to equipment failure by applying alternative effects and processes as necessary
8.Monitor quality of creative and technical output during productions

On successful completion of this course you will have developed and applied the skills and knowledge required to demonstrate competency in the above elements. Through the application of these skills and this knowledge, you will be able to:

  • Prepare storyboards and scripts
  • Set up and operate a vision mixing console in a television studio
  • Set up and operate studio cameras, audio and lighting equipment.
  • Work collaboratively with production teams.


Details of Learning Activities

 Out of-class self-directed learner activities for this course include but are not limited to: additional equipment practice sessions, private research at selected sound equipment websites and revision of notes to reinforce classroom content. These activities will be monitored during class through question/answer sessions.

 Assessment for this course will involve demonstration of skills and knowledge through written and practical tasks.


Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task #1- Photo storyboard production and vision mix.

Due Class 3,4,5 or 6 depending on a production schedule roster.

Assessment Task #2 - Variety Interview production and vision mix.

Due Class 11,12,13 or 14 depending on a production schedule roster.

This is an ungraded assessment task.
To complete this assessment you will work as a member of a production team of 4-5 students to
produce pre-production documentation and vision mix a variety interview production.
Pre-production documentation includes:
- Final run down sheet including voice over script
- Lighting plan
- Studio floor plan

You will then work as a member of a production team to vision mix the variety interview production.

You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of the assessment task.
The marking criteria is available on Blackboard.
Once you have demonstrated competency, your final assessment task will be graded (refer to MyRMIT for grading rubric).
You should refer to the Assessment Tool document which is available on Blackboard for full details of this assessment task.
