Course Description

 

In this unit students will develop the skills and knowledge required to assist young people to identify the challenges and opportunities in their lives and to work towards their goals on an individual or group level.  This applies to all youth work roles where the young person is the primary client.

 

This unit is delivered and assessment with CHCYTH010 Provide services to young people appropriate to their needs and circumstances

Overview of Assessment

 

To demonstrate competency in this course you will need to complete all of the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard. You will receive written feedback on all assessment (refer to MyRMIT for assessment criteria).

 

Assessments will include:

Assessment one

Develop two action plans for young people in response to case study scenarios

Assessment two

Role play to demonstrate communication skills needed when working with young people (Individual video required)

Assessment three

Written response to questions about advocacy

Assessment four

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) 120 hours of placement in a youth work agency,  workplace assessment requirements and a written report

 

assessment requirements aligned to WIL activities.

Assessment Tasks

There are three assessment tasks for this course:

1.  Action Planning a SMART goal (in class).  Due date:

2.   Assessment Task 2 – Workplace Assignment Action Planning with a young person  Due date 29.07.2015

  • Students will be provided with a covering letter and must give this to their placement manager or mentor to be signed. The letter outlines the parameters of the assessment task, what is required of students and the contact details of RMIT staff
  • Students must interview one young person whilst on placement (choose a young person you have become familiar with and have built a rapport and relationship with)
  • You MUST obtain the young person’s written and informed consent to participate in this process, young people must not be identified; please do not use their real names or details for this assessment task. Consent forms will be provided to you.
  • With your chosen young person ask them to explore and identify a goal with your help that they wish to achieve in a short-term period (approx. 3 months or less)
  • Using template provided in class complete the goal action plan with the young person, using the SMART system
  • You must complete the action plan as outlined below 

 3.  Work based assessment Due date 30.10.2015 (final)

  • You are required to complete a Work Placement Assignment while you are on Work Placement.
  • The complete Work Placement Assignment is located in your Work Placement Logbook. The Assignment is in three parts with questions that focus on three different young people/groups of young people that you work with on Work Placement.
  • Part A of the Work Placement Assignment focusses on the two units:
  • • CHCYTH001 Engage respectfully with young people
  • • CHCYTH002 Work effectively with young people in the youth work context
  • However, you must satisfactorily complete all three parts of the Assignment and all other Assessment tasks to gain competency in these units.
  • An RMIT Youth Work Teacher will visit you and your Work Placement Supervisor to discuss your progress in the required skills and knowledge.

Assessment Tasks Submission Cover Sheet: You must complete a submission cover sheet for every piece of submitted work, including online submissions. This signed sheet acknowledges that you are aware of the plagiarism implications.
