Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to implement and monitor an organisation’s work health and safety (WHS) policies, procedures and programs in the relevant work area in order to meet legislative requirements.

It applies to individuals with supervisory responsibilities for implementing and monitoring the organisation’s WHS policies, procedures and programs in a work area. These individuals have a broad knowledge of WHS policies and contribute well developed skills in creating solutions to unpredictable problems through analysis and evaluation of information from a variety of sources. They provide supervision and guidance to others and have limited responsibility for the output of others.

Learning Outcomes


This course is structured to provide students with the optimum learning experience in order to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to implement and monitor an organisation’s work health and safety (WHS) policies, procedures and programs in the relevant work area in order to meet legislative requirements.


Details of Learning Activities

A range of learning activities are planned for this course including self-paced and collaborative class room based activities.

The self-based activities will be delivered through various technology platforms and will include quizzes, scenario case studies and interactive sessions.

The collaborative classroom based activities will include group discussion, group problem solving activities and opportunities to practice skills in a simulated workplace environment.

Assessment Methods

Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of the requirements in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks, for example:

  • direct questioning combined with review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of on-the-job performance by the candidate
  • review of final printed documents
  • demonstration of techniques
  • observation of presentations
  • oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of software applications

You are advised that you are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate your assessment work to your teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.

Performance Evidence

You must provide evidence of the ability to:

  • explain clearly and accurately to work team the relevant work health and safety (WHS) information including:
    - WHS legislative and organisational requirements
    - identified hazards and outcomes of risk assessment and control
  • ensure that the team has access to information about WHS policies, procedures and programs in appropriate structure and language
  • implement and monitor procedures according to organisational and legislative WHS requirements including:
    - consultation and communications to enable team members to participate in managing WHS risks and hazards
    - identifying WHS training needs and providing learning opportunities, coaching and mentoring as appropriate to needs
    - identifying, reporting and taking action on WHS hazards and risks
    - identifying and reporting inadequacies in existing risk controls and monitoring outcomes to ensure a prompt organisational response
    - reporting on the cost of WHS training
    - keeping WHS records
    - analysing aggregate WHS data to identify hazards and monitor risk control procedures in work area.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements effectively, you must:

  • outline the legal responsibilities and duties of managers, supervisors, persons conducting businesses or undertakings (PCBUs) and workers in relation to WHS risk management in the workplace
  • identify key provisions of relevant WHS Acts, regulations and codes of practice that apply to the business and outline how they apply in the work area
  • explain organisational policies and procedures relating to hazard identification, risk management, fire, emergency and evacuation, incident investigation and reporting
  • explain the importance of effective consultation mechanisms in managing health and safety risks in the workplace
  • explain how the hierarchy of control applies in the work area.

Assessment Tasks

OHTH5871C Implement and Monitor a Workplace Health and Safety Program and BUSM7937c Identify risk and apply risk management processes are co-delivered and co-assessed.

This course has three assessments.  You must fully and successfully complete all assessments to be deemed competent in this unit.

Assessment 1
Assessment Task 1 – Verbal Presentation by each student
Date handed out: Week 1
Date and time due: Week 5 in class
Group or Individual: This is an individual assessment

Purpose: A key requirement for this unit is the ability to provide information to the work team about WHS policies and procedures. In many cases you will do this by speaking or presenting to your colleagues. This assessment is designed to assess your ability to do this.

Requirements:
The student is to prepare a verbal presentation of between 5-7 minutes. The presentation will be conducted in class with the teacher and the students: other staff members may be present if available.

Students can use power point or other electronic presentation media, but must not be longer than 5 slides in total including title page.

A summary of the presentation is to be submitted to the teacher in hard copy on the day. This summary is to be a minimum of 1 ½ pages and no longer than 2 pages or 900 words. A template will be supplied to assist the student in collating and organising their assessment material. Students are advised to keep an individual copy of their assessment material.

Students should be sure to effectively introduce themselves prior to presenting.

Details of Assessment:
Broadly, the content of this presentation will be based upon your progress for assessment task three.

It must include the following:
•Name of your report / company – your choice (must be professional)
•Three key aspects of WHS and Risk that you learned so far and how you are going to use these in your final assessment
•Your understanding of the relationship between good workplace health and safety practices and risk management
•Your understanding of two things that you (as a manager) can do to lift Safety performance in a workplace


Assessment 2
Assessment Task 2 – Risk Identification and Mitigation report
Date handed out: Week 1
Date and time due: Week 9 in class. Those students not in class will have to 5.00pm that day to submit an electronic copy of the assessment.
Group or Individual: This assessment will be a compilation of documents developed in class with a brief report included. The content of this assessment will be covered in class and will include:
•Risk assessment document
•Risk assessment matrix
•Other documents from class as directed by the teacher. These may include student quizzes and other materials from class
•A questionnaire that will incorporate questions that will require short bullet point answers

This assessment will be individual

Purpose:
The purpose of this assessment is to generate sufficient evidence for the student to prove their competency against the assessment criteria. Students are required to complete all formal assessment and class activities that will be combined into a body of evidence that will be combined into a portfolio of evidence.
The student will be assessed against the assessment criteria and either a ‘Competent’ or ‘Not yet Competent’ grade will be awarded.
This combination of evidence into a workplace portfolio is for the students’ benefit when presenting evidence to a potential employer and is reflective of information gathering and formation that is required in most professions.

Requirements:
This assessment will be a compilation of documents developed in class with a brief report included. The content of this assessment will be covered in class and will include:
•Risk assessment document
•Risk assessment matrix
•Other documents from class as directed by the teacher. These may include student quizzes and other materials from class
•A questionnaire that will incorporate questions that will require short bullet point answers

This assessment will be individual

 

Details of Assessment:
This assessment requires the evidence from assessment 1 and the collated evidence on class material such as risk assessment and matrix, class quizzes and other materials as directed by the teacher. A template will be supplied to assist the student in collating and organising their assessment material. Students are advised to keep an individual copy of their assessment material.
 
Assessment 3
Assessment Task 3 – Portfolio of Works

Date and time due: Week 15: 5.00pm Friday
Group or Individual: Individual Assessment


Purpose:
This portfolio of evidence will be in electronic copy and filed through turnitin. This portfolio of evidence will include all the evidence of your class participation and class exercises and assessment summaries. Throughout the program, we will address the assessment criteria in class.

Requirements:

Assessment Task 3
Assessment Topic: Portfolio if evidence from assessment tasks 1, 2, and 3.

Assessment Matrix

Marking Guide (competency):
Vocational Education and Training (VET) is based on current industry needs and the focus on preparing you for the workplace. Because VET courses are informed by practical application of knowledge and skills, they are based on a system known as ‘competency based training’ (CBT). So when you are assessed in VET it is about whether you are competent to do the job, as well as having a firm grasp on the knowledge and skills required to do that job, as opposed to traditional curriculum based education settings that are often based on knowledge retention.

You need to demonstrate you are competent in each element of the unit of competency you are studying.

You will receive feedback on each assessment task that will inform you whether you are competent or not and how well you are performing. Once competent in all elements of the unit you receive a competency grading.

Marking Guide (Grading)
After achieving competency we then grade your performance in the unit; this gives you the opportunity to have the level of your performance formally recognized against industry standards and employability skills.

You will be provided with an assessment matrix in the assessments area of the unit blackboard shell.  Generally, your grading will be assessed against how well you demonstrate:

  • Perform the activities as required by the learning elements of this unit of competency.
  • Demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit of competency.
  • Execute the required skills for this unit of competency.
  • Demonstrate your employability skills through contribution to learning activities related to this assessment, timeliness, use of technology and teamwork.

Other Information

Late Submissions

Students are required to submit assessment items and/or ensure performance based assessment is completed by the due dates. If a student is to be prevented from submitting an assessment item on time, by circumstances outside their control, they may apply in advance to the teacher for an extension to the due date of up to seven calendar days. To be eligible for an extension, you must lodge the extension form availabile at the following link with your teacher: http://www.rmit.edu.au/students/assessment/extension

Where an extension of greater than seven days is needed, the student must apply for special consideration.
