Course Description
This course describes the skills and knowledge required for a worker to participate in safe work practices to ensure their own health and safety, and that of others in work environments that involve caring directly for clients. It has a focus on maintaining safety of the worker, the people being supported and other community members.
This course applies to all workers who require knowledge of workplace health and safety (WHS) to carry out their own work, in both centre-based and home-based service provision.

Legal and ethical frameworks include legislation, policy and regulatory requirements and concepts of duty of care, dignity of risk and least restrictive alternatives. Over three workshops we explore this and your roles and responsibilities as support staff. We must meet individual needs of clients within the legal and ethical frameworks of our field in the available time, budgets, staff numbers and capacity. The NDIS is changing the landscape and we need to develop new ways of meeting client choices and preferences. Undertaking our work within the legal and ethical frameworks of our field includes compliance with OHS requirements including manual handling, workplace safety, fire safety, community access and individual support practices. Assessment Tasks
This course is assessed with CHCLEG003 Manage legal and ethical compliance.
Assessment task 1 requires you to reflect on your experience of safe work practices to develop a case study and analyse three different scenarios, identifying the legal and ethical issues and concerns. The purpose of this task is for you to demonstrate your skills and knowledge in identifying safe work practices and managing legal and ethical breaches.
Assessment task 2: For this assessment task, you are to develop a workplace policy and procedure and determine the best process for communication. This assessment task is one of four you need to complete satisfactorily, to be deemed competent for this cluster.
Assessment task 3:The purpose of this assessment task is for you to demonstrate that you can correctly follow procedures relating to:
- infection control
- the use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
- manual handling
- emergency procedures
- hazard identification and reporting.
Assessment task 4: This assessment task allows you to demonstrate your knowledge of key safety requirements and the legal and ethical requirements related to work in disability services. This quiz-based assessment task is one of four assessment tasks you need to complete satisfactorily in order to be deemed competent for this cluster.
