Course Description

This course introduces the key technical and organisational skills needed to create live productions for screen industries including television & film. Productions include studio and location based small and large crew styles and involves collaborations with a wide range of production crew.

1.1 With reference to production documentation, confirm key objectives and scope of productions with relevant personnel

1.2 Determine cost of, and sources for, required resources according to organisational procedures

1.3 Develop realistic expenditure estimates that conform to budget allocations

1.4 Identify potential budget overruns and resolve or recommend alternatives to relevant personnel

1.5 Reach agreement on evaluation methods for monitoring progress

Learning Outcomes


On successful completion of this course, you will be able to create productions for screen industries including television & film having learnt to:

  • Write a program brief, script and rundown
  • Hold pre production meetings
  • Create floor and lighting plans
  • Liaise and communicate with a production crew 
  • Observe safe work procedures
  • Use technical knowledge to produce a segment


Details of Learning Activities

In class activities will include a range of teacher directed group activities, projects, class exercises, review discussions/lectures and independent project based work.

Out-of-class activities include completion of individual design and pre-production work, preparation for class presentations and location excursions/production work. Online research and occasional outside of class time group discussions will be required to maintain project work.

4 Operating a more complex production (two studios) and advanced set up and operation of RCP D50, split screens for colour correction and white balancing. EVS operation in 3 camera mode.

16 Reserved for Production Factory. This class provides an opportunity for students to get final feedback on their performance during the semester and segments are reviewed in their finished program formats.

Assessment for this course will involve demonstration of practical tasks and testing of your knowledge.


Assessment Tasks

To demonstrate competency in this course you will need to complete the following assessment tasks to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback on all assessments and once you have demonstrated competency you will also receive a grade for your final assessment task. The graded assessment task will determine your final result for this course. (Refer to myRMIT for grading rubric).

 

Ungraded Assessment Tasks

  • Production1of4: Produce a three minute live program called 'Picture Me'. Due weeks 5, 7 & 8 Semester 1
  • Production2of4: Produce a segment brief and rundown for your own segment idea.  Segment brief due 24th April.  Rundown due 29th May
  • Production3of4: Crew the drama production 'Coming Clean' & news program 'Newsline' as Vision Mixer, Directors Assistant, Graphics Operator, Autocue Operator, EVS Operator.  'Coming Clean' productions take place weeks 13, 14 & Semester 1 and 'Newsline' takes place September Semester 2.

Graded Assessment Task

  • Productions4of4: Produce at least one magazine style segment either in the studio or on location, to be included in the lifestyle program class production of '24 Melbourne'.  Due by 23rd October, Semester 2
