Course Description

This course introduces the key technical and organisational skills needed to create live productions for screen industries including television & film. Productions include studio and location based small and large crew styles and involves collaborations with a wide range of production crew.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 With reference to production documentation, confirm key objectives and scope of productions with relevant personnel

1.2 Determine cost of, and sources for, required resources according to organisational procedures

1.3 Develop realistic expenditure estimates that conform to budget allocations

1.4 Identify potential budget overruns and resolve or recommend alternatives to relevant personnel

1.5 Reach agreement on evaluation methods for monitoring progress

1.6 Develop action plans for realising productions; taking deadlines, legislative requirements and a range of other factors into account

1.7 Develop contingency plans to minimise the impact of unexpected events on the process of realising productions

1.8 Reach agreement on action plans and budget, and amend documentation as required

2.8 Attend run-throughs and production meetings to identify changes that need to be made to plans and update and distribute workplace documentation accordingly

2.9 Maintain communication with production departments to ensure a coordinated approach to realising productions

Learning Outcomes


On successful completion of this course, you will be able to create productions for screen industries including television & film having learnt to:

  • Write a program brief, script and rundown
  • Hold pre production meetings
  • Create floor and lighting plans
  • Liaise and communicate with a production crew 
  • Observe safe work procedures
  • Use technical knowledge to produce a segment


Details of Learning Activities

In class activities will include a range of teacher directed group activities, projects, class exercises, review discussions/lectures and independent project based work.

Out-of-class activities include completion of individual design and pre-production work, preparation for class presentations and location excursions/production work. Online research and occasional outside of class time group discussions will be required to maintain project work.

 Sem 2 week 1 6 July [excursion to Gearhouse broadcast facility in docklands @ 10-00am] Advanced studio operation. Detailed pre-production planning incorporating Audio, Lighting & Camera refreshers.

Final Pre-production planning for Quiz/Drama Productions. Review the production schedule, develop a crew roster and finalising production budgets.

 3  Pre-production planning for 'Newsline' collaboration in September. Master control operations and communication, realising virtual sets and 'Quiz' preparation.
 4  Operating a more complex production (two studios) and advanced set up and operation of CCU, split screens for colour correction and white balancing. EVS operation in 3 camera mode.
 5 -8  Assessment - Productions3of3 'Variety' productions are produced on weekly basis until the end of semester. Monitor Post-Production elements

 9-11 Revision of productions and review post production requirements for the quiz shows, consolidation of production skills and planning for Live sport productions and Newsline scheduled for weeks 12 - 15.
12 - 15 Assessment - Prod'n3o3 'Variety' productions and 'Newsline' are produced on weekly basis until the end of semester.
16 Reserved for Production Factory. This class provides an opportunity for students to get final feedback on their performance during the semester and segments are reviewed in their finished program formats.

To demonstrate competency in this course you will need to complete the following assignments to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback on all assignments and once you have demonstrated competency you will also receive a result after your final assignment.

Ungraded Assignments

  • Production1o3: Co -produce a three minute live program called 'Picture Me'. Due weeks 6, 7 & 8 Semester 1
  • Production2o3: Produce a segment brief and rundown for your own production segment idea.  Due 27th April , Week 11. 
  • Production3o3: Producer/Co-Producer [Production Manager/TechnicalProducer/DA/Director] for at least one program Due by 19th October, Semester 2
