Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work respectfully with people from diverse social and cultural groups and situations, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

Learning Activities

All learning activities you will undertake within the course are designed to provide you with the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to perform to the standard expected in the health industry.

Learning activities include:

Lectures – introduce you to the key concepts within the course
Practical workshops – provide an opportunity to practise your skills in a simulated work environment
Work placement – provides you with practical experience in an industry environment

Overview of Assessment

You must demonstrate Performance and Knowledge Evidence of the unit in order to be deemed competent. 
Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks.
You may be assessed by: 
• Oral or written questioning 
• Oral presentations
• Assignments and projects 
• Direct observation of actual work practice 
• Presentation of a portfolio of evidence which may comprise documents, and/or photographs and/or video and/or audio files 
• Work-based activities 
• Third-party feedback from a work supervisor/employer
Primary assessment involves on-going practical and applied assessment in a clinical workplace or simulated environment such as a supervised student clinic or at a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placement activity.

Assessment Tasks

1. A class presentation where you will describe your own cultural background. Identify race or ethnicities that are part of your make-up. Outline your family’s cultural background in terms of your country of origin. What attitudes to other cultural groups have you observed in your own family or community? Why do you think these attitudes exist?

2. Diversity research assignment

3. Workplace evidence log book, a collection of evidence activities to prove competence, knowledge and skill in a variety of elements and performance criteria across a range of units.

 

Please note that you will need to demonstrate competency in all assessment tasks in order to achieve competency for this unit.
