Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to recognise the core language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) demands of training and assessment, and to tailor training and assessment to suit individual skill levels, including accessing relevant support resources. This unit introduces trainers and assessors to core language, literacy and numeracy issues in training and assessment practice. Competence in this unit does not indicate that a person is a qualified specialist adult language, literacy or numeracy practitioner.

Details of Learning Activities

During the Address adult language, literacy and numeracy skills of unit, will participate in online learning activities such as: analysis of case studies and scenarios, role plays, developing learning programs, group discussions and working in pairs. Other activities will include: online research, and reading articles provided by your trainer.

At RMIT Work Integrated Learning (WIL) refers to opportunities for you to experience either real or simulated workplaces within your program. WIL activities in this program include:

• Simulations of training and assessment work environments
• Work based projects completed within your own workplace.

Many students who undertake this program are already employed in a training and assessment role. Some assessment activities are conducted in a workplace and you are encouraged to use your own workplaces for this. If you do not have a workplace please consult your trainer about alternative arrangements.


Teaching Schedule

There are two (2) full day online workshops scheduled for this unit:

 

Day 1 Online Workshop:

What is Language Literacy and Numeracy (LLN)

What is the relationship between VET and LLN:

  • The Australia Core Skills Framework.- its use for identifying LLN skills of learners and in identifying the LLN skills required in a training specification.

 

Day 2 Online Workshop:

  • Practical activities to put LLN strategies into practice. You will do tasks 1 to 6 in the workshop and then finalise your responses and documentation for submission post the workshop.
    • LLN Task 2.1: Identify LLN skills needed to perform a workplace task
    • LLN Task 2.2: Identify LLN skills held by a learner
    • LLN Task 2.3: Select instructional and assessment strategies that address identified LLN needs
    • LLN Task 2.4: Customise learning resources
    • LLN Task 2.5: Work with LLN specialists.

Overview of Assessment

During the program you will complete assessment tasks in class as follows  

  • answering knowledge questions
  • identifying LLN skills need in the workplace and/or training and the LLN skills of learners
  • selecting instructional and assessment strategies that address LLN needs
  • modifying learning and assessment materials
  • working with LLN specialists
  Outside of class you will select, use and review LLN support strategies implemented in your workplace     


Assessment Tasks

To demonstrate competency in this course you will need to complete all of the following tasks to a satisfactory standard. You will receive written feedback on all assessment tasks.  

Assessment Task 1: Knowledge questions - You will answer several knowledge questions associated with this unit Knowledge questions  

 

Assessment Task 2: You will complete several activities in class where you identify LLN skills needed to perform a workplace task, identify a learner’s LLN needs, select instructional and assessment strategies that address identified LLN needs, customise learning resources and work with LLN specialists  

 

Assessment Task 3: You will complete a workplace project where you select, use and review LLN support strategies   Further details of the above assessment tasks will be available in the Canvas LMS.  

 

It is a requirement of the Cert IV TAE (TAE40116) program that all assessment work be submitted electronically through the LLN Canvas LMS.

Submission deadline: all 3 of the above assessments needs to be submitted by midnight September 25 2020   It is a requirement of the Certificate IV Training and Assessment (TAE40116) program that all assessment tasks are to be submitted electronically through the LLN Cluster Canvas LMS.
