Course Description

 This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan documents, draft text, prepare final text and produce documents of some complexity.

 It applies to individuals who work in a range of business environments and are skilled in the creation of reports, information and general promotion documents that are more complex than basic correspondence, memos or forms and that require review and analysis of a range of information sources.

Learning Outcomes


This course is structured to provide students with the optimum learning experience in order to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to plan documents, draft text, prepare final text and produce documents of some complexity.


Details of Learning Activities

This course is structured to provide students with the optimum learning experience. Students will participate in a combination of group and individual learning activities. These activities will be provided through a combination of face to face teacher/student deliveries plus classroom work time. Additional learning activities will also be provided to students to complete outside of timetabled time.

Overview of Assessment

 Assessment Methods

Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of the requirements in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks, for example:
• direct questioning combined with review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of on-the-job performance by the candidate
• review of final printed documents
• demonstration of techniques
• observation of presentations
• oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of software applications

You are advised that you are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate your assessment work to your teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.

In order to achieve competency in this unit, you must provide:

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

plan, draft and finalise complex documents that require review and analysis of a range of information sources
use business technology to apply formatting, and incorporate graphics
edit the draft text to ensure accuracy and clarity of information, obtain feedback on the draft and revise the draft
apply the enterprise style guide/house style.
Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

identify the enterprise style guide/house style
outline formatting styles and their impact on formatting, readability and appearance of documents
explain rules and conventions for written English, as defined by general and specialist sources.

Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or online discussions.  You are encouraged to ask and answer questions during class time and online sessions so that you can obtain feedback on your understanding of the concepts and issues being discussed. Finally, you can email or arrange an appointment with your teacher to gain more feedback on your progress.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment 1

 

Summary and purpose of assessment

You will be writing five documents. Four will be based on a set scenario and one will be a job application letter based on a role and company of your own choosing. You need to compile them as a complete individual portfolio by the due date.

The five documents are:

  1. Business email - internal
  2. Business letter – to customers
  3. Website copy – launch of new product
  4. Brochure – new product
  5. Job application letter – own choice

Task instructions

For each of your documents, submit the following three parts:

  1. Planning and process stages for your document
    • Summary of the purpose and objective of your document
    • Who you are contacting
    • What are the clear messages you want to send
    • What style and language you use to engage your target audience (check for company style guide)
    • Check with manager or relevant stakeholders for their input
  2. First draft stage of the document
    • Check grammar, spelling and style for accuracy and punctuation
    • Check content and message are correct and complete
    • Check with manager or relevant stakeholders (sign off)
  3. Final document

 

Scenario

Melbourne-based Amazing Furniture are a fully Australian owned furniture manufacturer of high quality furniture. The furniture is manufactured locally. They retail through major furniture outlets in Melbourne and regional Victoria.

The marketing manager has decided to organise a formal customer launch for their new range of dining chairs and has decided to invite 100 of their major customers to their head office showroom located at 639 St Kilda Road Melbourne to view their new product range from 9am through to 5pm on Saturday, 28 April.  Food and beverage will be provided.   Any orders on the day will be given a 30% discount.

  • An email is to be sent internally advising the staff of the event, purpose and objectives
  • The invitation to customers will be sent in the form of a business letter
  • The new range will be added to the existing website
  • A new brochure is to be developed showcasing the new range and providing all the technical data

Assessment 2

Summary and purpose of assessment

Prepare a detailed business proposal for Amazing Furniture relating to  their new chair range.  The proposal must cover key factors listed in the instructions below.  A slide presentation of the business proposal must also be provided and presented in class by the group.


Task instructions

Prepare a detailed business proposal for Amazing Furniture relating to  their new chair range.  The proposal must cover key factors such as:

The target market for the new range - discuss the demographics and psychographics. 
The competitive edge and reasons why the range will appeal to your target market.
Proposed selling price, cost structure and expected profit margin per unit.
Projected sales volume and sales dollars over the first three years.
Merchandising and other promotional support that will be provided for the new range (additional to the work done in assessment 1).

The assessment is to be completed as a group.  Students may choose their own group – groups of 3 minimum.
The report format (1200 words minimum) is to be electronically submitted via Canvas as a MS Word or PDF file.
The business proposal must include relevant graphics, company logo, graphs and figures.
A slide presentation of the business proposal must also be provided and presented in class by the group.

You will be assessed against the criteria as listed in the observation checklist of this task and how well you answer the questions asked by your assessor. To achieve a satisfactory result you will need to address all criteria satisfactorily.

Assessment 3

Summary and purpose of assessment

Participation in a debate conducted in class on an agreed topic. The purpose of this assessment is to demonstrate the student's ability to articulate, present and debate ideas.    Assessment will be based on:

  • How convincing the argument is
  • How well the debating rules are followed
  • How well the debating group presents
  • How well the debating group responds to opposing arguments
  • Speaking within the allocated times - 3 minutes each

Task instructions

Prepare for and conduct a debate on a specific agreed topic.  Determine the roles within each of the debating groups, key points of argument, preparation of rebuttals.  Teams of three - one being the captain plus two other team members.  Use of appropriate verbal and non verbal communication skills.

Instructions on the assessment completion

The debate will be held in class during week 15.  No written work is required to be submitted. Attendance is mandatory in order to pass this assessment.

  • Ensure that you submit assessments on or before the due date.  
  • Always retain a copy of your assessment tasks. (hard copy and soft copy)
  • When you submit work for assessment at RMIT University you need to use the Assessment task document that includes a declaration and statement of authorship.
  • Each page of your assessment should include footer with your name, student number, the title of the assessment, unit code and title and page numbers.
