Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to operate dental radiographic equipment and position the patient correctly to produce an intraoral and extraoral diagnostic radiographic image.

Where work relates to extra-oral radiography this includes orthopantomogram and may include lateral cephalograms (for orthodontic radiographic work-ups) and excludes cone beam radiography.

This unit applies to dental assisting work.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand Standards and industry codes of practice.

3.4 Remove the exposed intraoral dental radiographic detector package carefully from the mouth

3.5 Separate the packaging and barrier sleeve when required from the detector and label image correctly prior to processing

This unit is co-delivered in conjunction with HLTDEN007 Apply the principles of radiation biology and protection in dental practice and HLTDEN008 Prepare to expose a prescribed dental radiographic image. 

You must enrol in the two units delivered in this cluster and all learning and assessment activities will include the components of all competencies.

Teaching Schedule

This unit is co-delivered in conjunction with HLTDEN007 Apply the principles of radiation biology and protection in dental practice and HLTDEN008 Prepare to expose a prescribed dental radiographic image. 

You must enrol in the two units delivered in this cluster and all learning and assessment activities will include the components of all competencies.

 

The classes will be delivered on level 3 or 2 of Building 154, RMIT (within the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne). Notification will be provided via student email if the date or location change.

The following schedule is as per the timetable issued to students via email prior to their commencement, as well as on Day 1 during student induction into the program. Overview of Assessment

Before the critical aspects of evidence are considered all prerequisites must be met.

  • produced 30 acceptable dental radiographic images in a simulated environment including:

        applying safe work practices for dental radiography work including:

              following standard and additional precautions

              operating a radiographic unit correctly

              safely using radiation in dentistry

  • produced and critiqued 20 acceptable dental intra-oral radiographic images taken on a minimum of 10 different people demonstrating skills in peri apical (PA) and bitewings (BW)
  • produced and critiqued 10 acceptable dental extra oral radiographic images taken on a minimum of 10 different people.

To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency. Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks.


Assessment Tasks

To demonstrate competency in this course, students will need to complete all the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard. 

  

1. Legal and Ethical Online Quiz/Assessment (This assessment is co-assessed in a cluster HLTDEN009 Produce a prescribed radiographic image in conjunction  with HLTDEN007 Apply the principles in radiation biology and protection in dental practice and HLTDEN008 Prepare to expose a prescribed dental  radiographic image)

This assessment will cover national and State legal requirements and considerations for dental assisting work relevant to radiography including Duty of Care, safe use of radiation, consent, record management, WHS, rights and responsibilities, licences, work roles etc. Students will have 3 attempts available to complete this quiz successfully. 

The score/feedback will be automatically provided after each attempt on CANVAS. 

 

2. Dental Anatomy Exam  (This assessment is co-assessed in a cluster HLTDEN009 Produce a prescribed radiographic image in conjunction  with HLTDEN007 Apply the principles in radiation biology and protection in dental practice and HLTDEN008 Prepare to expose a prescribed dental  radiographic image)

this is an open book assessment scheduled on 1 May 2018. This assessment will assist students in understanding and interpreting geometric qualities of the radiographs. In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, student must score 60% of the overall mark.

Feedback to students will be provided via Grade Centre on Canvas and will also be discussed verbally if required. 

 

3. Intra-Oral Simulated Portfolio (This assessment is co-assessed in a cluster HLTDEN009 Produce a prescribed radiographic image in conjunction  with HLTDEN007 Apply the principles in radiation biology and protection in dental practice and HLTDEN008 Prepare to expose a prescribed dental  radiographic image)

Students are required to produce a Portfolio of 30 intraoral radiographs during their simulated practice at RMIT. Each radiograph submitted must have a Critique sheet attached as part of this assessment. The Intraoral part of the Portfolio must be submitted at the time of student Practical Intra Oral Simulated Assessment.

Student will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to assessment criteria outlined in assessment document. In order to achieve a Satisfactory result student must successfully complete all listed requirements of assessment criteria: present 30 intra oral radiographs as part of the portfolio and correctly critiqued all  processing and technical errors for all radiographs submitted.

Students will receive written and/or verbal feedback on this assessment.

 

 

4. Intra-oral Simulated practical assessment   (This assessment is co-assessed in a cluster HLTDEN009 Produce a prescribed radiographic image in conjunction  with HLTDEN007 Apply the principles in radiation biology and protection in dental practice and HLTDEN008 Prepare to expose a prescribed dental  radiographic image)

This assessment will be conducted on Thursday of the same week when students are attending their Inta oral clinical practice sessions (as per the group allocation). 

This is a simulated assessment in the Level 3 Sim Lab involving all 3 techniques- Bisecting, Paralleling and Bitewing technique. Only after successful completion of this assessment students will be permitted to take radiographs on real patients under direct supervision of their workplace mentors.

Assessment criteria and further information will be discussed with students during their attendance to lectures, as well as practical session. 

To undertake a practical clinical assessment (simulation), students MUST present for the assessment process as follows:

  • Appropriate clinical attire (no shorts, jeans or tracksuit pants, no bare midriff, no singlet tops).
  • Footwear fully covered in leather/vinyl (not suede) clinical footwear.
  • Hair is to be contained by tying back or in appropriate hair cover.
  • Fingernails must be short and clean and no nail varnish to be worn. No artificial fingernails are to be worn.
  • The wearing of henna is acceptable.
  • No jewellery to be worn on the hands or wrists. Wedding rings or jewellery that cannot be removed for cultural reasons must be taped with an appropriate waterproof tape .
  • All cuts/ skin abrasions on the hands or wrists must be covered with a waterproof dressing

A student that is non-compliant with any of the above requirements will not be permitted to undertake practical exercise or assessment at the scheduled time which will result in assessment being rescheduled. Workplace supervisor will be informed of this via email or phone call. 

Student will attempt the practical assessments under supervision of the assessor and they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in assessment document. In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, student must successfully complete all listed requirements of assessment criteria 

Students will receive verbal feedback on this assessment.

 

5. Simulated Extra Oral practical assessment

This assessment will be conducted on the same day of student attendance to practical Extra Oral session (as per the group allocation). This is a simulated assessment in the Level 3 Sim Lab involving Extra oral (OPG) exposure. Students will be observed in patinet positioning and will also be required to produce  2 (OPG) Extraoral radiographs during their simulated practice at RMIT. Each Panoramic radiograph submitted must have a Critique sheet attached as part of this assessment. 

 

Only after successful completion of this assessment students will be permitted to take radiographs on real patients under direct supervision of their workplace mentors.

Assessment criteria and further information will be discussed with students during their attendance to lectures, as well as practical session.

6. Extra-oral Radiography Assignment 

This assessment task will assist students to gain better understanding of extra-oral radiography including operation of the equipment, patinet management, labeling and mounting and recognasing structures and errors. (Due Date - TBC).

In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, student must successfully complete all questions in this task.

Students will receive a written feedback.

 

 

7. Case Presentation  (This assessment is co-assessed in a cluster HLTDEN009 Produce a prescribed radiographic image in conjunction  with HLTDEN007 Apply the principles in radiation biology and protection in dental practice and HLTDEN008 Prepare to expose a prescribed dental  radiographic image)

This assessment is conducted on Monday 13 August 2018. Students will be presenting the Challenging patient they have experienced during their workplace training. Presentation will need to be approximately 5 mins long and will be presented in front of the group. Criteria for this assessment will be available on CANVAS and will also be discussed further duruing face to face sessions. 

Outcome/feedback will be provided  via Grade Centre on Canvas and will also be discussed verbally if required. 

 

8. Pitfalls Assessment  (This assessment is co-assessed in a cluster HLTDEN009 Produce a prescribed radiographic image in conjunction  with HLTDEN007 Apply the principles in radiation biology and protection in dental practice and HLTDEN008 Prepare to expose a prescribed dental  radiographic image)

This assessment will be focued on variety of processing and technical errors students might experience. It will provide a good testing tool and clarification in this area. It will also assist students to further their knowledge in errors. 

Feedback will be providedf via CANVAS  and in class. 

 

9. Intra-oral Patient Portfolio x30 images  (This assessment is co-assessed in a cluster HLTDEN009 Produce a prescribed radiographic image in conjunction  with HLTDEN007 Apply the principles in radiation biology and protection in dental practice and HLTDEN008 Prepare to expose a prescribed dental  radiographic image)

Students are required to produce a Portfolio of 30 diagnostic intraoral radiographs during their clinical practice at their workplace. Each radiograph submitted must have a Critique sheet attached as part of this assessment.

First part of the Portfolio containing 10 radiographs must be submitted on Monday 13 August 2018. 

Second part of the Portfolio containing 10 radiographs must be submitted on Monday 3 September 2018

Third part of the Portfolio containing 10 radiographs must be submitted on Monday 8 October 2018

 

Student will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to assessment criteria outlined in assessment document. In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, student must successfully complete all listed requirements of assessment criteria: present 30 diagnostic intra-oral radiographs in the portfolio and correctly critique all technique and/or processing errors.

Students will receive written feedback on this assessment.

 

10. Workplace Extra-Oral Radiographic Portfolio

Students are required to produce a Portfolio of 10 extraoral radiographs (OPG's) during their clinical practice at their workplace. Each extraoral radiograph submitted must have a Critique sheet attached as part of this assessment. The Extraoral Portfolio must be submitted by 5 November 2018.

Student will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to assessment criteria outlined in assessment document. In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, student must successfully complete all listed requirements of assessment criteria: present 10 extra-oral radiographs in the portfolio and correctly critique all technique and/or processing errors.

Students will receive written feedback on this assessment.

 

 

11. Written Exam  (This assessment is co-assessed in a cluster HLTDEN009 Produce a prescribed radiographic image in conjunction  with HLTDEN007 Apply the principles in radiation biology and protection in dental practice and HLTDEN008 Prepare to expose a prescribed dental  radiographic image)

This is conducted on 8 October 2018. The written test will be conducted under supervision at RMIT under exam conditions. 

In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, student must score 60% of the overall mark.

Feedback to students will be provided via Grade Centre on Blackboard. 

 

12. Workplace Assessment  (This assessment is co-assessed in a cluster HLTDEN009 Produce a prescribed radiographic image in conjunction  with HLTDEN007 Apply the principles in radiation biology and protection in dental practice and HLTDEN008 Prepare to expose a prescribed dental  radiographic image)

This is conducted after student last day of attendance and prior to their enrolment end date. Detailed information on assessment criteria will be explained to students during their class attendance. Allocated assessor will contact the student for discussion and scheduling of the suitable time for this assessment. Student knowledge and skills will be observed in the workplace according to assessment criteria provided in assessment document.

Students will attempt the workplace assessments under supervision of the assessor and they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in assessment task.

In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, student must successfully complete all listed requirements of assessment criteria. 

Students will receive a verbal feedback on this assessment.
