Course Description

In this unit you will cover the skills and knowledge required to setup machines for product changes. It applies where discretion and judgement may be required, for both self and others, in planning and selecting processes, procedures or outcomes. Work may involve individual and team activities and is performed within defined procedures under direct supervision.

This course addresses the following units from the program and all the units are clustered for delivery but may assessed separately

1 Determine job requirements

Performance Criteria:


Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)


Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times


Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with standard SOPS


Identify job requirements from specifications, drawings, job sheets or work instructions


2 Prepare to coordinate or set up machines

Performance Criteria:


Interpret product specifications correctly to meet machine setting requirements


Set machine in accordance with product specifications, machine manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures


Obtain material to be used


3 Organise sample quality testing

Performance Criteria:


Operate machine in accordance with manufacturer and workplace instructions to produce a specified sample


Test sample, or organise the test, in accordance with workplace practices to meet required quality standards


4 Finalise and record machine settings

Performance Criteria:


Interpret test results to determine adjustment requirements and re-adjust machine settings, if necessary


Assess adjustment changes in accordance with product and machine specifications


Inform appropriate production personnel when the newly set-up machine is available, in accordance with workplace procedures


Prepare reports and maintain records where necessary, in accordance with workplace procedures

Details of Learning Activities

Integrated learning consisting of theory and practical components will be carried out in practical workshops for the skills and knowledge required to co-ordinate or set up machines for product change.

Teaching Schedule

Weeks 1 – 16
Practical workshops to co-ordinate or set up machines for product change will be conducted in conjunction with other practical based learning. Workshops will include demonstration of techniques and students will be required to demonstrate their practical skills required to co-ordinate or set up machines for product change. Learning will include identifying and using appropriate equipment, safe set-up of equipment & working with a range of materials and components used in footwear manufacture. Work to co-ordinate or set up machines for product change will be carried out during the development of the following pairs of shoes:

Week 1-4 Development of Court Shoe - 1Pair
Week 5-11 Development of Derby Shoe and Sandal - 2Pair
Week 12-16 Development of Oxford Shoe and Sandal - 2Pair

Overview of Assessment

Assessment is ongoing throughout the semester and will consist of both theory and practical based exercises, predominantly in class but some out of class research and information formatting is required as well. Feedback will be provided throughout the semester on all assessment tasks.

All assessment tasks must be completed before competency can be achieved. Tasks that have not be authenticated in class as the student’s own work will not be considered for assessment. Regular attendance is encouraged.

Assessment Tasks

Student will demonstrate skills and answer relevant questions regarding the knowledge and skills required to co-ordinate or set up machines for product change. To a competent standard while producing five pairs of shoes.

Work will be assessed against a competency based assessment checklist. 

Co-ordinate or set up machines for product change and the work related to  will also be assessed in the shoes presented for assessment.

Assessment One: Due week 4-5,  Using the Clicking press adjust settings to correctly cut shapes as required.
Assessment Two: Due week 7-8,  Threading and setting up Sewing machine
Assessment Three: Due week 16,  Setup and adjust machine settings to sew Oxford Upper components as required.
