Course Description

This unit covers the skills and knowledge to provide minor maintenance of footwear production machines.

In this unit students will develop knowledge and skills as it relates to problem solving skills and initiative and enterprise to identify and act on minor machine faults within area of own responsibility. This unit also requires planning and organising to safely and efficiently use, check and clean and lubricate machines and technology used in TCF industries. Communication skills are also required to document and report faults and maintenance information.

Learning Outcomes


On the successful completion of this unit you will have developed and applied the skills and knowledge required to demonstrate competency in the above elements. You will have learned to undrstand procedures and guidelines for safe operation and maintenance of machines and typical fault conditions and related fault-finding procedures. In addition you learn basic machine maintenance and repair techniques and cleaning and lubricating techniques.


Details of Learning Activities

This course covers skills and knowledge to provide minor maintenance of production machines and basic Hand tools used in the production of Footwear.  It also applies to checking machine performance and undertaking minor adjustments to production machines.

This is a Vocational Education and Training qualification and is assessed for Competency. To be assessed as Competent means you have consistently demonstrated the required knowledge and skills at a standard required in the workplace. To be assessed as Competent in this course, you will need to complete each assessment task to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of each assessment task.

Task 1


Summary and Purpose of Assessment

This short-answer assessment task is one of three assessment tasks you need to complete satisfactorily, in order to be deemed competent for this cluster. 

This assessment task allows you to demonstrate your knowledge required to:

  • Perform minor maintenance

 

Assessment Instructions

What

  • You must satisfactorily answer all 9 questions
  • You should answer all questions in the spaces provided, using full sentences, word count and dot points when requested
  • All work must be your own

 

Where

This is an online assessment task. You will need to answer all questions on CANVAS.

 

How

The knowledge assessment is accessed through the Canvas shell and you must complete and submit your responses within the allocated assessment timeframe.

 

If you are not able to attend the scheduled assessment timeframe you need to advise your teacher so that an alternative assessment arrangement can be made. This knowledge assessment is an individual assessment task that must be completed with minimal support from your supervisor (allowed support includes further explanation of the task requirements or explanation of assessment criteria etc).


Task 2

Summary and Purpose of Assessment

This practical assessment task is the second of four assessment tasks you need to complete satisfactorily, in order to be deemed competent for this cluster. 

 

This practical assessment will allow you to demonstrate your ability to perform minor maintenance. 

 

Assessment Instructions

 

What

There are 4 parts to this task, you will be required to complete:

Part 1: Determine job requirements

Part 2: Operate machine and assess performance

Part 3: Rectify minor machine fault

Part 4: Maintain machine

 

For the purpose of this assessment, the machine you will be using is the trimmer. 

 

You are required to start the trimmer, monitor its performance, make minor adjustments to rectify minor machine faults and complete records.

Where

This assessment will be conducted in the footwear workshop.

How

You will be assessed against the criteria as listed in the observation checklist in Section B of this task and how well you answer the questions asked by your assessor. To achieve a satisfactory result, you will need to address all criteria satisfactorily.


Task 3

Summary and Purpose of Assessment

This practical assessment task is the third of four assessment tasks you need to complete satisfactorily, in order to be deemed competent for this cluster. 

 

This practical assessment will allow you to demonstrate your ability to perform minor maintenance. 

 

Assessment Instructions

 

What

You are required to clean and maintain the Finishing Machine.  This involves:

  • Clean excess material from machine
  • Vacuum and empty waste draws
  • Check, remove, refit and centre sanding belts 

 

Whilst undertaking this task, your Assessor will be observing your ability to:

  • Read and follow work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), safe work practices and other reference material
  • Apply relevant standards
  • Apply work health and safety (WHS) policies in work operations
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with SOPs
  • Clean machine according to WHS practices and schedules, workplace procedures and manufacturer cleaning instructions. (Appendix 2)

Where

This assessment will be conducted in the footwear workshop.

How

You will be assessed against the criteria as listed in the observation checklist in Section B of this task and how well you answer the questions asked by your assessor. To achieve a satisfactory result, you will need to address all criteria satisfactorily.


Task 4

Summary and Purpose of Assessment

This practical assessment task is the fourth of four assessment tasks you need to complete satisfactorily, in order to be deemed competent for this cluster. 

 

This practical assessment will allow you to demonstrate your ability to identify, document and report a major machine fault.

 

Assessment Instructions

 

What

During your course, you will experience a major machine fault.  A major machine fault is when you are unable to use the machine due to a malfunction.  This means that the machine has broken down and requires a major repair.    Examples of major faults include:

  • Electrical equipment that does not start/stop when switched on and connected to a power source or operates in an unusual manner
  • Signs of dame or excessive wear and tear such as exposed wiring, missing parts
  • Leaking fluids
  • Damaged electrical leads

 

Report major machine fault

When you experience a major machine fault, you are required to:

  • Report the major machine fault to your Assessor
  • Complete an out of service tag (Appendix 2)
  • Follow workplace procedures as set out in the Workplace Agreement in Appendix 1.

This assessment will be conducted in the footwear workshop.

How

You will be assessed against the criteria as listed in the observation checklist in Section B of this task and how well you answer the questions asked by your assessor. To achieve a satisfactory result, you will need to address all criteria satisfactorily.
