Course Description

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to prepare stencils and screens for textile printing.

This course consists of 2 Units of Competency that are clustered for delivery but assessed separately. The other Unit of Competency in this clustered course is:

  • MSTTD4005 – Produce screen printed textiles

This course is delivered in a studio / workshop that simulates industry working environment

A range of learning activities, projects and tasks have been designed to allow students to demonstrate competency.

Please note - not all learning activities are assessment tasks, participants will be advised well in advance if an assessment is taking place.

OHS Induction to screen reclaiming, screen selection, storage and labelling. Characteristics of stencil and screen types, printing processes and practices, different types of screens and meshes. Prepare paper stencils

Undertaking general Print room induction – ASS 1

*Rubber gloves and basic tool kit should be bought to every class              

2.         

General print room induction.

Testing paper stencils.
Workstations, tools and equipment are set up according to specifications for work and OH&S practices. Finishing, drying, evaluate and conduct quality check. Pack up workstation, clean studio, correct storage, OH&S

*Optional*extra fabric for printing (100% cotton only – preferably calico or plain weave)

 

3.         

Testing paper stencils (continued).
Workstations, tools and equipment are set up according to specifications for work and OH&S practices. Finishing, drying, evaluate and conduct quality check. Pack up workstation, clean studio, correct storage, OH&S

4.         

Print paste media - what is it, how is mixed, chemical structure, properties, using pigment media, OH&S. Pigment printing processes, heat setting and testing samples.  Induction to using the heat press. Tonal scale and heat setting activity

 

 

5.         

Screens are prepared for photographic stencil process, coating with photographic emulsion – techniques, OH&S

 

Media is selected to prepare stencils. Stencils are completed and checked against design.

6.         

Stencil masters are exposed according to industry specifications, Screen images are developed, dried and finished.  Strike off is printed and checked against design specifications to ensure quality standards are met. 

 

Specialist inks and foil, samples, heat setting, care requirements, printing on dark grounds, using the heat press, OH&S.

 

  • Dark coloured or patterned fabric, or a combination of both

         (1/2 metre approx.)

7.         

Prepare stencils and screens quiz revision.

Completion of all practical exercises to date.

 

 

8.         

Final housekeeping, reclaim screens, correct storage, compilation of technical file. Undertake quiz.

Design work bought to class.  Analysis and suitability of designs are discussed; conversion techniques and options are considered. Selection of textile substrates is considered in accordance with job and design requirements.

Tool kit needed in class:

 Many materials used in this course will be covered by a materials fee and will be provided in studio sessions for example-fabric, paper, pigment, binder, photographic emulsion, film etc.

You are required to provide the following tools and equipment.

30 cm steel ruler
Sharp scissors
Cutting knife with replaceable blades
Pacer/grey lead pencil
Fine liners
A3 size visual diary
Brushes – a variety
Black permanent marker

1 pair of household rubber gloves (from supermarket) and an old towel for drying screens and equipment

This course is assessed in accordance with competency-based assessment. To demonstrate competency in this course you will need to complete all the assessment to a satisfactory standard.

You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of each assessment task.
