Course Description

In this course you will develop the skills and knowledge associated with selecting, developing and testing dyes, chemical and auxiliaries and developing dye specifications and recipes for the dyeing of textiles for self and others. Textile materials for which dye specifications are developed include fibres, yarns and fabrics.

Confirm specifications and/or sample of textile material product with originator and client

Clarify and determine the end use and performance standards expected of finished product with appropriate personnel

Analyse sample to determine type and composition using appropriate techniques, as required

3 Perform preliminary and final tests of dyes

Performance Criteria:

3.1

Select dyes and chemicals and auxiliaries with reference to specifications and or previous product dyeing references

3.2

Identify expected textile production and reproduction processes based on preliminary dye selection, and advise appropriate personnel

3.3

Determine preliminary dye selection for the sample of textile and trial the preliminary recipe and specifications

3.4

Select sampling and testing techniques appropriate to evaluation of product during limited production run

3.5

Perform final selection and evaluation of dyes

3.6

Comply with environmental requirements and workplace procedures at all stages of the process

Seek approval of colour specifications by originator or client prior to production run

4.2

Test samples from bulk production run using appropriate techniques

4.3

Analyse results and review, modify and re-test dye, as required

Develop, check and file dye specification and recipe in accordance with workplace procedures and industry and quality standards

4.5

Prepare reports and documentation

4.6

Monitor dye specification and recipe to ensure continuity and repeatability of colour and test results


Learning Outcomes


On successful completion of this course you will have developed and applied the skills and knowledge required to identify the correct dye class for different fibre, to formulate appropriate dye recipes and to successfully apply the dye to different  fibres, yarn or fabric in accordance with correct OHS procedures.

This cluster unit will be delivered fully on campus in a dye lab.
In this course you will undertake the following learning activities:

Natural Dye techniques exploration – fugitive dyes and adjective dyes discussed and explored – mordanting and methods for achieving colourfast results on a range of fabrics and fibres

Natural Dye techniques exploration – dyestuffs ground and fabrics mordanted and left for additional session after semester break

 

Mid Semester Break

Week 8   

Assessment Task 2 – Dye Secondary Colour on allocated Fibre

Students are provided with a fabric sample (any fibre) and asked to demonstrate and document their ability to select a secondary colour and prepare a Report that determines they have selected the correct dye for the fibre.

Direct dyes on Bamboo/Viscose/Cotton/Linen/Hemp fabrics

Lanasol dyes on a variety of wool fibres and fabrics.

Modified Basic Dyes using Acrylic & Acrylic Blends.

Skein Dyeing using Cotton, Wool, Polyester, and Bamboo yarns.

Natural Dye techniques – return to dyestuffs from week 7 and overdyeing

Assessment Task 3 Client project trial – classroom activities focus on trialling methods for developing specific and individual dye recipe

Assessment Tasks

This course is assessed in accordance with competency-based assessment. To demonstrate competency in this course you will need to complete the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of each assessment task. You need to complete all three (3) tasks and 2 check lists to a satisfactory level.

Assessment 1 Induction to dye laboratory and Work Health and Safety 
Due Week: 5
Correct use and handling of dyes and chemicals. Wearing of PPE and adhering to the Laboratory rules.

Assessment 2  Selected fabric/colour dye task and report.  
DueWeek: 9

You will be allocated a piece of fabric (Wool, Cotton or Polyester) which you are required to dye a selected colour (secondary colour) and then comment on the final outcome.

Assessment 3  Client Project   

Due Week: 15
You are required to conduct a series of trial dyeing to achieve a final outcome of a perfectly dyed item in consultation with a chosen client. Document the processes.
Make a presentation of client profile, process and final outcome.
