Course Description

In this course you will learn how to identify a variety of natural and synthetic fibres, yarns and textile materials. You will also learn about the way fibres and yarns can be knitted, woven, spun and/or tufted to create fabrics that are used to construct garments, home-wares and a variety of textile products.

Discussion of staple/filament fibres and fabric constructions. Commence Animal (protein) fibres types, properties and uses. Fibre samples; Commence a fibre classification chart.

Commence Plant (cellulose) fibres types. properties and uses. Fibre samples; add information to fibre property chart; Identify fibres, using microscope, burning and other methods;

Assessment 1 WHS & SOP (completed in class).

Regenerated and Synthetic fibres. fibres types. properties and uses. Fibre samples; add information to fibre property chart. Complete Fibre Identification chart; Yarn structure video; Identify fancy yarns; Calculate tex of selected yarns

Introduction to Woven structures; Different types of weaves using paper. Discuss Bias, Warp, Weft, Selvedge and grain line. Examine different types of woven fabric samples. Plain, Twill, Satin, Pile, Dobby and Jacquard. Discuss fabric performance.

Weft Knits. Examine different samples. Single jersey, double jersey, Rib, Ponte ect.   Warp Knits discuss and examine samples of fabric. Raschel, Tricot. Discuss fabric performance. Collect samples to be used as reference.
