Course Description

In this course you will develop the skills and knowledge required to analyse the key principles of merchandising and marketing textile products. You will investigate all the stages of the textile product supply chain; from merchandising through the wholesale and retail channels.

 

This course consists of 2 Units of Competency that are clustered together for delivery and assessment. The other unit of competency in this clustered course is:

Learning Outcomes


On successful completion of this course you will have developed and applied the skills and knowledge required to asses the features of your textile product and considered its place in the market. You will have conducted a marketplace analysis (SWOT) and determined niche markets, price points and investigated consumer behaviours and/or consumer profiles.

Assessment Task 1: Knowledge Questions
Due date: Week 5

This assessment task is one of three that you need to complete satisfactorily to achieve competency in this unit. 

This knowledge assessment requires you to answer a set of questions to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the following; 

  • working safely in the textile, clothing and fashion (TCF) industry 
  • relevant Australian Standards related to selling textile products locally 
  • different research strategies 
  • characteristics of domestic and global TCF (Textile Clothing Footwear) market segments 
  • what components make up the TCF (Textile Clothing Footwear) supply chain 
  • promotional and marketing tool and practices 
  • purchasing options and sales processes 
 

 

Assessment Task 2:   Marketing Research Report
Due date: Week 8

This assessment task is one of three that the student needs to complete satisfactorily to achieve competency in this unit. 

The purpose of this assessment is to examine and identify characteristics of the domestic and global TCF (Textile Clothing Footwear) market and to establish how to identify networks applying to TCF products, TCF market segments and the implication for marketing activity and trends influencing TCF production and supply.  You will prepare a Market Research Report documenting their findings using a range of research strategies (in-person, online, digital, industry publications).  The Research Document will be saved as a PDF and uploaded to Canvas.   

 

Assessment Task 2:   Marketing Plan
Due date: Week 10

This assessment task is one of three that you need to complete satisfactorily to achieve competency in this unit. 

The purpose of this assessment is to prepare a Marketing Plan document that identifies current practices in the marketing and merchandising of a Textile Design Product. You will research a range of textile design objects/galleries or textile design practitioners to explore current methods of marketing and merchandising textile products. 

You will pick a textile design product and use this research to prepare a marketing plan that defines the product information including description, production processes (including sustainable approaches), target markets, trends, pricing and purchasing requirements and the creative use of marketing tools used to market and merchandise your textile product. 

You will then go on to research and cost a range of suitable promotional tools (3) to support the marketing and merchandising of that product.
