Course Description

This course describes the skills and knowledge required to interpret a prescribed request for a dental radiographic image. It also includes the preparation of the patient for dental radiography and the selection of equipment requirements and applies to dental assisting work.

Overview of Assessment

This unit is being co-assessed with HLTDEN007 Apply the principles of radiation biology and protection in dental practice and HLTDEN009 Produce a prescribed dental radiographic image. 

You must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that you have correctly interpreted 3 different dental radiographic requests and prepared for procedure including:

  • checking patient’s identify and consent
  • selecting a range of radiographic imaging equipment using appropriate technical variables for the requested radiographic procedure
  • using procedures to minimise the risk of radiation to the patient, the operator and others.

To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency.   

Regular attendance is necessary. 

Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks and consist of knowledge and practical based tasks.
