Course Description

This unit focuses on the nature of current economic development and its relationship to  enterprise activity.


Learning Outcomes


Student will look at the following topics in depth:
1.  Enterprise and economic development
2.  Small and informal enterprise
3.  Youth an Enterprise
4.  Planning micro-enterprise
5.  Setting up a small business


Details of Learning Activities

By the end of this module you  will be able to:

  • identify the different factors that shape and influence current economic development, particuarly at a local level
  • explain the connections between economic development and youth development work
  • use experiential learning strategies to develop youth enterprise skills, with the aim of promoting local economic development
  • access the available opportunities for self-employment and identify which agencies support young men and women for this purpose
  • devise and deliver programs of informal education for young people to acquire enterprise skills
  • support young women and young men in setting up small business projects
  • assist young women and young emen to secure resources (grants, credit, specialist expertise, support services, etc) to establish and operate small business projects
  • contribute entrepreneurial expertise in the development of local economic strategies
  • establish networks with different agencies in this field.


Teaching Schedule

This module will take seven weeks to complete, usually during the second year of study.

Students will work through each of the given units  in the book, completing the various activities and self-help questions as they work through that.

Assessment Tasks

Assessments to be completed for this module are:

  • Learning Journal -  to submit the learning activities and self-help questions for the Module
  • a 3000 word report. in the form of a major project that will consolidate your learning for this module. It will help you  establish an  enterprise in  your community.  There are three parts to your report

Part 1 - identify a local enterprise that can be established to respond to a specific need in your  community

Part 2: Identify the process to be adopted to establish the enterprise then the barriers you expect to encounter

Part 3: Develop a plan for the enterprise that you propose to establish. Include your marketing strategy and a projected profit and loss sttaement.
