Course Description

This unit is designed to help the student understand some of the theoretical background issues of youth development work so they can relate what they are doing

1.  Ways of seeing young people
2.  Adolescence
3.  Young people and the family
4.  Young people and social issues


Details of Learning Activities

There are four units students will complete during the seven weeks allocated to this module:

  • Unit 1 Ways of seeing young epople
  • Unit 2: Adolescence
  • Unit 3: Young people and the family
  • Unit 4: Young peope and social issues


Teaching Schedule

At the end of this module students will be able to:

  • describe the experience of growing up as a young woman or man and the different perceptions held by young people and adults
  • outline and give a critique of different theories of adolescence
  • anaylse the position of young people in your society
  • discuss the influence of family, peers and communty on individuals and groups
  • discuss the range of social contexts as they relate to young people in your region
  • compare the ways in which different social and cultural traditions treat young people
  • work in a way that is sensitive  to socal and cultural tradition
  • identify situations in whch you need to adapt your practice to take account of different social and cultural traditions
  • communicate your knowledge to young people and adults in a way that is accessible to them

The assessment tasks for this module are:

  • Learning Journal - studnets will sumbit the completed self-help questions and activities located throughout the module booklet
  • 2000 - 2500 word report which answers the question ’How are the young people in your society acting in relation to  social and economic change, including such issues as unemployment and crime?  What are the implications for your work practice?
