Course Description

This module is designed to introduce the student to a range of different approaches to work  with young people.  It will provide a clear understanding of several of the key practices in youth work, thus helping the student to develop their insight and skills by drawing on a rich frame of reference.

In this unit the student will study the topics of
1. Youth development work: history and traditions
2. Youth development work: models and approaches
3. Youth work practise
4. Face-to-face skills
5. Social change or social control?
6. Professional conduct


Details of Learning Activities

There are seven weeks allocated to this module.  Students will work through the six units on their own, completing the learning journal and the essay/project as they do.  There are also readings tand case studies to be completed.

  • explain the important factors that have  affected youth developmnet work and the influence of current trends
  • delineate the professional role of the youth worker
  • describe how inequality affects different groups of young people and discuss the role  of youth development work in intervention
  • describe how young people can act as agents of change with special reference to the work of Freire
  • demonstrate how projects can empower young people and contribute to commmunity and/or national development
  • analyse youth work practice in terms of history
  • begin working effectively with young people and adults in enabling them to improve the quality of their lives
  • address professional dilemmas n youth development work
  • deal effectively  with a range of types of oppression encountered in work
  • select from a range of different approaches to youth development work

Assessment Tasks

The assessment tasks for this module are:

  • Learning Journal - the self-help questions and actitivies  for the module, found within the book
  • Interview and report: Students will conduct an interview with a youth worker and then use the interview data to critically reflect on the role of youth workers in their country.  A 1000 word reoprt based on the  data and information collected is to be submitted.
