Course Description

This module has two goals.  The first is to introduce the student to the  values what have come to underpin the Commonwealth. - human rights, equity, democracy, pluralism, citizenship, participation and  empowerment.

The second is to  introduce the student to  the Commonwealth as an international organisation - how it evolved, how it is structured and what it is trying to achieve.

1.  Introducing Commonwealth values and structures
2.  Human rights: universal values
3. Democratic values and structures
4. Commonwealth values and youth  development


Details of Learning Activities

There are four units for this module whch studnts will  work through.  These are:

  • Unti 1: Introducing Commonwealth values and structures
  • Unit 2: Human Rights: Universal values
  • Unit 3: Demoncratic values and strucutres
  • Unit 4: Commonweatlh values and youth development


Teaching Schedule

By the end of this module students will be able to:

  • describe the origins of the Commonwealth and key events in its history  since formation
  • demonstrate a clear understanding of Commonwealth values and princples and provide examples of how they are put into practice
  • explain elements of demoncratic theory and human rights philosphy and practice, and identify the mechanisms through which different rights are protected in democratic systems
  • give exapmples of how to paply thes principles n your work with  yuong women adn men
  • describe the values of the diverse cultures and traditions embraced by the Commonwealth
  • undertake activities to help young people understand the principles that underpin Commonwealth values
  • develop programs of activity which enable young people to acquire skills and experience in ctitizenship and effective particpation in public affairs
  • operate different styles of democratic and participatory decision-making in particular consensual roles

Assessment Tasks

Teh assessment tasks for this module are:

  • Learning journal - students will submit their completed self-help questions and actitivies found throughout the  module booklet
  • a 2000 word written report.  Students will design a two-day workshop for a group of 20 youth club leaders from your area of work. You will include the objectives, justification of relevance, thematic content, activities to take the  group through a process, materials required, evaluation process
