Course Description
In this course students produce paintings through the application of a range of techniques and materials. As such, the results are expected to be varied and broad in nature.
Via a number of projects, students investigate the essential nature of Painting and consider it within a range of contexts - historical, contemporary, social and political. Painting is presented as not merely a material substance for personal expression, but also as a vehicle that implies how one thinks. Students are introduced to a range of methods and mediums associated with Painting. Emphasis is placed on the aquisition of fundamental skills and to developing understanding of personal research and observation.

Details of Learning Activities
-Class based instruction evolving from prescribed exercises and projects.
-Additional self-initiated painting practice
-The collection of approriate research material in a Visual Arts Journal. this should include some direct observational work.
-A sound knowledge of contemporary and historical painting practice
-A solid technical basis for painting practice, selecting and using approriate materials.
Teaching Schedule
Week 1 - 7 Painting Workshops. Students are introduced to differnt painting techniques. Skills are developed through practical application of paint and an understanding of how different contemporary artists emply paint as a vehicle for expression is introduced. Delivery is practical and through powerepoint presentations.
Week 8 - 16. Painting Projects. Students work independently in class at also at home in response to projects iniiated by the staff. Conceptual development is integrated with the practical skills developed in the painting workshops. Stretching and preparing canvas is demonstrated.
