Course Description

This unit relates to the characteristics and quality standards of building materials, giving particular emphasis to those commonly selected and used in residential buildings (past and present).

Demonstrate knowledge of the properties, quality standards, testing, performance and visual characteristics of building materials.

Identify and select building materials commonly used in construction process.

Identify defects in materials, short and long-term degradation of materials, timber preservation and protection of metals.

Investigate suitable materials for typical residential building with regard to their structural adequacy, serviceability, appearance, compatibility, cost and fire resistance.


Learning Outcomes

-Demonstrate knowledge of the properties, testing, performance and visual characteristics of building materials.

-Investigate suitable materials for typical residential buildings regarding structural adequacy, serviceability, appearance, compatibility cost and fire resistance.

-Identify defects in materials, short and long term degradation, timber preservation and metal protection.

-Identify and select building materials commonly used in construction processes.


Overview of Assessment

Assessment in this course is progressive and will require demonstrated competence in one or more of the following ways:

-Practical projects, drawings and documentation, visual and oral presentations, written assignments, reports,  visual recognition , written reports,and hand made 3D models .

All assignments will have set due dates which must be adhered to. Late submission of work will carry a penalty but may be considered by prior arrangement if supported with a medical certificate or other appropriate documentation.
