Course Description

This unit is concerned with interpreting maps and plans for navigation in the forest.

1. Select traverse route

Performance Criteria:

1. Current position in the field is located using landmarks and key geographical features.

2. Current position in the field is identified on map or plan.

3.  Required destination is identified on map or plan.

4.  Hazards and potential hazards in traversing from location to destination are recognised and interpreted from map or plan, field observations, and local knowledge.

5. Traverse route to destination is selected using information from map or plan and field observations.

6. Distance to required destination is estimated using map scale and selected traverse route.


Learning Outcomes


This is a competency based course


Details of Learning Activities

Learning activities include classroom instruction and exercises,  and practical exercises in the field.

Students will learn how to create simple maps of their own on Google Maps.

They will also be introduced to Geographical Information systems (GIS) and its uses in the land management industry.

Assessment may include reports, tests and assignments


Assessment Tasks

 

Students will be assessed  on the basis of :

  • satisfactory completion of practical exercises at Anglesea, eg selecting a logical and safe traverse on a map, and successfully completing the traverse- (50% weighting), and
  • a short classroom quiz testing basic map and compass craft.-(30% weighting), and
  • practical demonstration of understanding of reading of Contours and map symbols-20%.
