Course Description

To provide learners with skills, knowledge and attitudes to become competent to:

• Develop a detailed store manual illustrating an understanding of stock allocation, visual displays, ticketing procedures and policies.
• Plan & construct a promotional calendar outlining seasonal changes in merchandising and displays.
• Manage the coordination, sourcing and construction of a visual window display for a specific target market.
• Use appropriate software packages for constructing floor plans, illustrations of displays, etc.

Details of Learning Activities

PLANNED LEARNING EXPERIENCES:

• Compare and contrast promotional and display trends used by a number of TCF retailers via field trips, group discussion, practical exercises and industry guest speakers

• Case studies observing the policies & procedures of TCF merchandising

• Underpinning knowledge delivered in lecture/tutorials to aid in the development of the merchandising manual

• Use of various word processing, graphics and spreadsheet packages to complete merchandising manual

• Simulated visual display workshops

• Visual presentations (slides-store layout and display) and other action or experiential learning activities

Assessment Tasks

1. Create a detailed store manual featuring stock allocation, visual displays, ticketing procedures and policies to industry standards 20% Group

2. Construct a promotional calendar outlining seasonal changes in merchandising and display, presented using a spreadsheet application 20% Group

3. Coordinate, source and construct a visual window display for a specific target market 40% Individual

4. Students are to construct a small-scale display in class using one of the skills acquired in class 10% Individual

5. Holistic assignment. Recommend the merchandising of a specific product (Semester II) 10% Group

6. Apply appropriate software to produce store manual, seasonal calendar, floor plans and displays
