Course Description

To provide learners with training in:
• intermediate sewing machine operations. At this level activities have been designed to assist learners improve hand / eye Co-ordination skills. Work pieces will provide learners with practice in the correct construction of garment parts that may involve operations such as stopping and starting at exact points, change of direction, curves and corners, use of different materials and seam type variations.
• skill and knowledge in following procedure to ensure their own safety and the safety of others in relation to sewing machine operations
the application of quality standards used in the manufacture of clothing

Co-requisites  To complete Follow defined OH&S policies and Procedures, as applied to sewing machine operations, learners also need to finish Production 1 and Production 3

Overview of Assessment

Learners need to demonstrate by means of a range of assessment tasks (such as oral or written tests and practical activities) that they can:
1. Prepare work according to safety standards and demonstrate safe work practices
2. Correctly thread, adjust, test and safely operate a industrial plain machine and a overlock machine to produce test and specified work-pieces.
3. Efficiently position and construct a range of intermediate level work-pieces (such as those that involve correct alignment of seam edges, seam widths, curved seams, seam junctions, back-tacking, change of direction and sewing corners) according to given samples and quality standards.
4. Complete short answer tests (oral or written) in relation to sewing machine operations.
5. Carry out health and safety procedures in operating equipment and in handling materials
6. Describe different types safety hazards that could be found in a work place and suggest appropriate ways of dealing with safety problems.
7. Describe workplace Occupational Health and Safety responsibilities by the listing the rights and responsibilities of employers and employees.
8. Describe methods for reporting safety hazards; explain appropriate procedures
9. Locate, name and note down types of faults created during garment assembly operations
10. Recommend suitable action to fix sewing faults that accord with quality standards .
