Co-requisites:
To complete this entire unit of competency you must also successfully finish the following courses:
Product Development and Production 1 and 2
Computer Aided Patternmaking
Computer Grading and Marker Making

Course Description

This course covers the skills and knowledge required for the construction of blocks to make patterns for use in garment production processes within an enterprise.

This course will include:
1. Analysis of garment silhouettes (by using a variety of media, such as trade sketches, sample garments, specifications sheets or client requirements) to identify design lines and other garment features.
2. Constructing patterns/blocks by identifying the desired silhouette and fit requirements from given specifications.
3. Adjusting pattern/blocks according to fabric requirements by first checking fabric characteristics (such as the handle and drape or the amount of stretch).
4. Constructing pattern/blocks according to required style and production specifications by use of different pattern making techniques such as, intermediate patterns, dart manipulation and draping
5. Producing accurate patterns/blocks according to garment design details and production specifications by checking pattern measurements and other details such notches, seam allowances grain-lines and pattern information.
6. Testing and adjusting the resulting fit by sewing toiles or prototypes.
7. Finalisation of pattern pieces according to specification requirements by checking all the pattern pieces for accuracy and details such as correctly positioned notches, seam allowances, style numbers, size and cutting instructions.
8. Maintaining records by filling in specification forms and by storing patterns for easy access.

National Codes, Titles, Elements and Performance Criteria

National Element Code & Title:

LMTPDCL06A Construct block to make patterns

Element:

Construct and adjust toiles

Performance Criteria:

a. Toiles are accurately constructed from the block.
b. Correct proportion, fit and balance is achieved by fitting and making the necessary adjustments.
c. Accuracy of adjusted toiles is evaluated in relation to specifications, body movement and comfort.

Element:

Construct the block

Performance Criteria:

a. Appropriate drafting principles and methods are selected for block construction.
b. Styles are analysed in relation to the size specifications and required silhouette and design lines.
c. Block is constructed and checked to ensure compliance with requirements.

Element:

Develop and complete final blocks

Performance Criteria:

a. Information from adjusted toiles is transferred to blocks.
b. Alterations are carried out in response to the toile fitting.
c. Final blocks are completed and checked for accuracy and completeness of all necessary information, including cutting instructions, and to ensure compliance with specifications.
d. Blocks are filed in accordance with enterprise procedures.

Element:

Interpret the design

Performance Criteria:

a. Design sketch/drawing is interpreted and clarified with designer or senior patternmaker as required.
b. Design lines and features are identified.
c. Fabric characteristics and performance, and trims and finishings are considered in relation to the design.

Element:

Maintain records

Performance Criteria:

a. Records are maintained and reports prepared, where necessary, in accordance with enterprise procedures.

Overview of Assessment

Regular attendance is necessary to demonstrate that you can:
1. Achieve the desired garment shapes and fit by constructing appropriate pattern blocks to correctly reflect garment requirements.
2. Apply the principles of good pattern making and correctly use pattern making techniques by producing accurate final patterns.
3. Test the pattern and carry out adjustments to fit by constructing suitable toiles and prototypes.
4. Give and receive information in relation to pattern making processes by making correct use of pattern making terms and by following and giving instructions on specifications.
5. Maintain and file accurate records by ensuring that all pattern work (full scale and 1/5th scale) is up to date and that it has the correct labelling in relation to production requirements. Accompanying class notes must also be filed.
6. Follow appropriate Occupational Health and Safety standards by ensuring that the work area is free of any safety hazards.

Assessment Tasks

Tasks that have not been authenticated in class as the student’s own work will not be considered for assessment.
