Learning Outcomes

Refer to Part B of the guide.

Details of Learning Activities

The training and assessment will be based on the medium of a “Folio Assessment Manual” this will cover the all Element/Outcomes and must cover the Student Activities/tasks/projects listed below: The major tasks for assessment are Task 3; 7; and the Final Task. The others, although not optional, develop an understanding to enable Students to share the competency abilities.
Based on this assumption that class-time will be a combination of “Providing Information” and “Student Activities/tasks/projects” and “Report of what you found”: the mix of groups and individuals will enable students to progress (they will not need to cope with the pressure of team-work, but rather use it as a tool in their development). Initially they will work in groups of three, or as an individual, developing your own preferences through your own “Assessment Feedback Sheet or Memorandum”. In which, each student will provide their understanding of their development by means of a “Feedback Sheet”: That allows the student to record “what was learned”, “what short-falls encountered” and “what they would do differently next-time”.

Assessment Tasks

Task 1 Introduction to the Scope and Frustrations of Global Operations * 5%
Based on six areas of the world, (you are allocated this from the roll of dice), produce a very simple report, to your peers in one hour’s time:
The task is to organise the transfer of data for the supply of your designed garment, and for a discussion with them at 11:00am next week; the target cost of the garment is $100 Australian, with the lead-time of 3 months after acceptance of an agreement.
• What should be considered? * This is Skills Audit, to enable an insight into the module.
Task 2 Global Operations References 5%
The hyperlinks provided are provided to assist Global Operations Students with a media to gain a better understanding of the module.
Your Task is to open each hyperlink and go into sections of the Web-page to see what is available, and then provide a brief summary of what each web-page is providing and its possible uses / tools to people using Global Operations.
• Consider the scope of the information and address the class with your outcomes.
Task 3 Concept of Globalisation Major Assessment 25%
Individually develop a simple presentation to your peers, and communicate the draft-outcome to your Teacher; imagine that you are in a different country from the Teacher, so use EMAIL and clear concise language.
Your task is based on the In-class video “The Global Market Impact” (which is also available via the Library). NB. As a guide only use the Attached Worksheet.
• Report on what you have understood about the concept of Globalisation and its impact on the Australian workplace and market.
Task 4 Fashion Festival Exhibitions and/or Industry Visits 5%
A visit to organisations: It will be expected that students attend and report on what was seen and how it affects their understanding of the module and its application.
• Consider the scope of the information and apply it to the 2008 apparel situations.
Task 5 Text Reading 5%
A chapter of a book is provided for your reading and understanding, along with four questions to be answered. Note the reading and the questions will be provided on disc, (students wishing to download the data or print copies can do so); the questions have footnotes (highlighted yellow text box) to assist in their application.
• Consider the scope of the information and apply it to the 2008 apparel situations.
Task 6 Product Costing 10%
An in-class exercise along with an article and an Excel spreadsheet are provided to improve the Student’s understanding of Product Costing. After a brief discussion about the differences between local and off-shore costing, Students are required to apply the recourse provided and develop a conclusion of what should be charged and why?
• Consider the scope of the information and apply it to the 2008 apparel situations.
Task 7 Collect and Analyse Data Major Assessment 20%
In teams up to four develop a presentation to your peers, and communicate progress weekly via EMAIL to Teacher.
Your task is to visit a local department, fashion, or speciality store and examine country-of-origin and fibre content labels in 30 to 40 garments*:
a. Among the garments* made of cotton, what country of fabric origin predominates? Where is each garment made?
b. Find the same information for garments* made of wool, silk, and man-made fibres.
c. Make a chart showing fibre content, country of origin, and country where made. Make separate sections for (1) foreign fabric and labour, (2) imported fabric but made in Australia, and (3) Australian fabric and labour.
d. Do you see a pattern forming? What conclusion can you draw from these data?
e. Are all garments adequately labelled?
f. How do prices compare between garments* made overseas and those made in Australia? How do quality and detailing compare?
g. From your DATA or other sources, select an Australian Company producing off-shore and investigate a raft of relevant information. Thereafter, present your finding and conclusions to a group of relevant people.
*Note: A similar number of fabrics supplies could also be investigated by one group. This would provide an opportunity for Students interested in raw material supply to gain and share their experiences.
