Course Description

To enable learners to:
• develop skills in the application of fashion design and colour theories
• provide assistance in the interpretation of design briefs, researching of fashion trends
• assist with costing and in the presentation of garment design concepts

Element:

LMTPDCL01A/01 Interpret design brief within specified guidelines

Performance Criteria:

Design parameters are clarified, in consultation with designer, sales team, management and/or client, where required.
A strategy plan and/or critical path plan is developed, when required.
Constraints are identified and taken into account when clarifying the brief.

LMTPDCL01A/02 Research relevant information within specified guidelines

Performance Criteria:

Trends in fabrics, etc. are researched for performance, colour, availability, care/maintenance requirements and suitability to project or design.
Technical requirements associated with production are assessed, within specified guidelines.
Any additional expertise required for the project is identified.

Performance Criteria:

Preliminary concepts are worked out in conjunction with others to identify possibilities.
Story themes are developed using fashion magazines, samples, swatches, trims and colour palette.
Ideas are contributed and discussed with team members to enhance the success of the project.
Relevant support materials and explanations are developed and refined in conjunction with members of the design team.

Performance Criteria:

Own role and relationship to others for the presentation meeting is determined and rehearsed.
Presentation is carried out in a manner which promote the design's acceptance/approval.

Element:

LMTPDCL02A/01 Prepare drawings/artwork

Performance Criteria:

Working drawings/artwork are prepared, in consultation with others to assist interpretation of requirements.
Completed drawings are checked against design brief and/or customer requirements and amended as required in accordance with workplace procedures.
Computer generated drawings are printed and backed up in accordance with workplace procedures.

Element:

LMTPDCL02A/02 Prepare specifications for approval

Performance Criteria:

Requirements are clarified and agreed.
Specification details are established and confirmed in accordance with enterprise procedures, including required standards of construction and overall quality.
Specifications are prepared, in the appropriate format, to assist the patternmaker in translating the fashion sketch and/or sample.

LMTPDCL02A/03 Collate and submit preliminary cost estimates

Performance Criteria:

All items required for the range/garment are checked and confirmed.
Costs of items required for the range/garment are compiled and compared.
Cost estimates are submitted to nominated staff for consideration and confirmation.
Adjustments are made to cost estimates, where necessary, in accordance with workplace procedures.

Performance Criteria:

Records are maintained and stored in accordance with enterprise procedures.

PLANNED LEARNING EXPERIENCES
1. Examination of styling details through application of design features to different figure types
2. Identification of target markets by means of research on customer and market groups
3. Investigation of local and global fashion trends, life-style and seasons through reference to media such as journals, the Internet other fashion resources
4. Selection of fabrics and colour combinations in relation to fashion styling: sourcing materials, practical activities in the application of techniques used in the development of fashion themes
5. More complex use of presentation techniques including storyboards and computer aided design in order to explain design concepts.
6. Preliminary garment costings through activities such as doing of garment cost break-ups, compiling and reporting costs.

Overview of Assessment

Overview of Assessment:
Tasks that have not been authenticated in class as the student’s own work will not be considered for assessment. Regular attendance is necessary to demonstrate that you can:
1. Complete research activities to investigate fashion trends, market groups and other factors that may influence fashion design concepts
2. Assist in selecting fabrics, trims and manufacturing processes that are compatible with the garment’s design and function and also in accordance with design briefs, specifications or customer instructions.
3. Assist in the development and presentation of styling details or variations according to given fashion story themes and the application fashion design principles
4. Give and receive appropriate information during the design process: use of correct terms, graphic written and oral information; folio and story-board work and completing presentation of design concepts by demonstrating ability to use appropriate presentation techniques (oral, written and graphic, computer aided design). This assessment event may be linked to the Team Work subject
5. Assist in compiling information for preliminary costing by producing garment cost break-ups and reporting cost estimates using appropriate written information (as a simulation or a workplace based activity)
6. Follow Occupational Health and Safety procedures
