Course Description

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to assemble and sew complex whole garments from written specifications and/or patterns.

LMTPRCL01DA/01 Prepare work pieces

Performance Criteria:

a. Work bundle is received, checked and any follow up action carried out in accordance with workplace procedures including checking that the bundle matches ticket information, that there are no cutting or fabric faults and that the relevant previous operation(s) has been successfully completed.
b. Work pieces are laid out in sequence in accordance with workplace procedures and specifications.

Performance Criteria:

a. Work bench and seating are set up according to workplace ergonomic standards.
b. Machines are cleaned and checked in accordance with workplace procedures.
c. Records are kept in accordance with workplace requirements.
d. Machines are set up and adjusted in accordance with workplace procedures and the specifications for the work (eg. correct thread, needle size and length needle guard, tension setting and attachments).
e. Needles, attachments and/or parts are checked and worn needles and/or parts are identified and reported or replaced, in accordance with workplace procedures and manufacturer's instructions.

Performance Criteria:

a. The performance of the machine is regularly checked for signs of faulty operation, including evidence from the inspection of finished pieces, and any action required is taken in accordance with workplace requirements.

Performance Criteria:

a. Pieces are sewn in accordance with the workplace procedures and requirements for operations.
b. Pieces are sewn in accordance with product requirements and the specified quality standards.
c. Pieces are sewn in accordance with the requirements for personal safety and the requirements for the speed of work.
d. Machine speed and work handling are controlled for the type of operations(s), fabric(s) and product type in accordance with workplace procedures.

Performance Criteria:

a. Sewn pieces are inspected, any faults identified, and appropriate action taken and finished pieces are checked against quality standards.
b. The results of the inspection of finished pieces are recorded in accordance with workplace procedures.
c. Action taken to either reject or correct faulty pieces is recorded in accordance with workplace procedures.
d. Preventative action taken to avoid any recurrence of defective pieces is recorded in accordance with workplace procedures.

Performance Criteria:

a. Workplace health and safety policies and procedures are followed in the operation of the machine(s).
Action is taken in accordance with workplace policies and procedures to prevent accidents and to eliminate risks to personal safety.

5. Machine set-ups including doing adjustments to settings; needle and thread type selection by comparing the characteristic of different fabrics
6. Receiving work-pieces; practice in handling work correctly including participation in a production run such as a Just in Time activity.
7. Doing quality checks: activities in identification of faults by reference to specifications and procedures for correcting faults
8. Giving and receiving relevant information; activities related to record keeping procedures

Overview of Assessment

Tasks that have not been authenticated in class as the student’s own work will not be considered for assessment. Regular attendance is necessary to demonstrate that you can:
1. Set-up and carry out work according to safety standards
2. Develop and carry out assembly plans for garments to show an understanding of the stages involved in whole garments assembly
3. Plan, set-up and carry out own work according to given specifications and time-lines
4. Carry out correct garment assembly operations and techniques by constructing a small range of garments, using given materials (including interlinings and fastenings), equipment and different machine types
5. Efficiently produce complex whole garments according to make and quality specifications.
Assessment time-line: Progressive assessments, unit tests, and assessment of completed garments.
