Course Description

This unit encompasses the knowledge and skills required to manufacture simple support elements for visual display.

Performance Criteria:

Frames are measured and cut accurately to specifications.

Corners are filled and sand mitred to industry standard.

Frame finishing mediums are applied evenly to achieve specified finish results

Design and construct simple visual merchandising structures

Performance Criteria:

Plans of simple fixed and collapsible visual merchandising structures are sketched for manufacturer according to client specifications.

Appropriate card stock is selected to achieve planned results. 

Card scoring and cutting techniques are appropriate to planned results.

Relevant fixing methods are selected and used.

Paint finishes are applied according to planned finish where relevant.

Colour copy images are applied to structures where relevant to the planned finish.

Finished structure matches client specifications and meets occupational health and safety requirements.

Workshop tools and equipment are used according to manufacturer operational and safety instructions.

Workshop area is maintained in a clean and tidy manner and materials are stored in accordance with enterprise procedures.

Workshop tools and equipment are cared for according to manufacturer instructions and workshop occupational health and safety procedures.

Faulty tools and equipment are reported according to workshop occupational health and safety and maintenance procedures.

Manufacture styrene signs

Performance Criteria:

Presentation roughs are composed for store signs.

Styrene cutting techniques are demonstrated using pinned card stencils.

Styrene shapes are mounted to achieve planned constructions.

Suitable paint finishes are applied to achieve planned results

Details of Learning Activities

On your timetable, this competency will be referred to as
Studio.
In this unit you will develop the skills required to design and manufacture Visual Merchandising props and signage in a simulated workplace environment. The props and signage will be suitable for various, in-store and retail environments.
Students will undertake O.H.S. Training, relevant to the environment, the tools equipment and the materials being used.
NOTE You will; be advised on the appropriate types of footwear, and this footwear will be worn at all times.
Failure to comply with this ruling will mean that you will not be able to enter the production area.

1 Introduction, and the demonstration of workshop function,tools and equipment. O.H.S. DEMONSTRATION,Record and sign off. 2.1. 2.3.
2 Demonstration of how to use the hot-wire cutter.
Students will cut 3 geometric shaped templates.
Students will use the 3 templates and cut 3 styrofoam shapes.
4.2.
3 Breif 1.Manufacture of a riser for V.M.P. presentation,templates ,hot-wire cutter adhesives. 1.1. 1.2. 3.1. 3.2. 3.3.
4 Continue the manufacture of the riser, glues ,adhesives finishes. 3.4. 3.5.
5 Brief 2The design and manufacture of a sign and icon for V.M.P. Presentations 4.1.
6 Discussion on the finer points of manufacture, the size of the sign, template methods, letter cutting, paint application 4.1.
7 Ongoing manufacture of signage and letter production, continue painting 4.1.
8 Fix lettering to background, spacing and layout considerations, produce the Icon. Complete both today 4.1 4.3. 4.4. 3.7.
9 Brief 3.The design and manufacture of an Art Deco Screen to be used in V.M.P. 5.3.
10 Demonstration of embossing techniques ,map out design and begin the embossing process 5.3.
11 Students should complete the screens today. 5.3.
12 Breif 4. Students will design and begin the manufacture of a classic decorative frame for V.M.P. 2.2.
13 Styrofoam application to base substrate,adhesives and laminating techniques, 2.2.
14 Ongoing production of decorative frame 2.2.
15 Apply decorative finishes to frame. 2.2.
16 Complete the decorative frame today 2.2.

Assessment Tasks

1. Introduction to studio, demonstration of tools and equipment, O.H.S issues.
2. Demonstration of the hot-wire cutters, students will cut 3 geometric shapes.

Brief 1. The manufacture of a riser for V.M.P.
Brief 2. The design and manufacture of a brand name panel and icon for V.M.P.
Brief 3. The deign and manufacture of an Art Deco screen, to be used in V.M.P..
Brief 4. The manufacture of a decorative frame, to be used in V.M.P.
All briefs are evenly weighted and the marks are averaged out at the completion of the unit.

• Attendance
The major learning experience involves group work, class interaction, presentations and installations. It is strongly advised that students attend all sessions in order to engage in the required learning activities, ensuring the maximum opportunity to gain the competency.


• Work not seen in progress
If a student hands in any work that the teacher has never seen in class or discussed with the student prior to the submission, the teacher can refuse the work on the basis of authentication issues.


• Late submissions
Late submissions may be considered at the teacher’s discretion, provided that:
a. A medical certificate has been produced; or
b. 48 hours notice is given re the inability to meet the nominated deadline; or
c. Special consideration forms have been completed.
Late submissions must be in consultation with the teacher and penalties may occur.
This is aligned with standard visual merchandising industry practice.


• Students may be permitted to resubmit work upon application with course teacher.


• Course guide is subject to change in relation to industry demands and availability.
