Course Description

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to assemble complex whole garments. Designed to help learners bring together all the sewing operations needed to complete the whole garment (according to make and quality specifications) using industrial machines.

1.  Prepare for garment assembly

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Relevant information on design elements is collected and organised.
1.2 Work pieces are prepared according to design concept.
1.3 Pattern pieces are laid out and attached to the fabric to match fabric pattern, nap and weave.
1.4 Garment components are laid out according to sequence of assembly operations.
1.5 Workbench and seating are set up according to OH&S practices.
1.6 Machines are set up and adjusted according to specifications for work.

2.  Assemble garment components

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Components are assembled according to OH&S practices, and accepted garment assembly techniques.
2.2 Garment is checked for sizing and appearance.
2.3 Garment is adjusted to better display design characteristics and correct fabric alignment, garment fitting and other features.

3.  Complete work

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Required hand sewing and finishing is undertaken according to design concept requirements.
3.2 Garment is pressed according to fabric requirements and garment construction details.
3.3 Quality and impact of finished garment is checked against original design concept.
3.4 Assembly issues are noted and communicated to appropriate personnel.


Learning Outcomes


This course is integrated with LMTFD4011A Cut Fabrics for Prototype Designs and LMTFD4007A Conduct Quality Assurance for Pattern and Garments, to meet customer specifications to form a cluster called ‘Production Prototypes.’

Students will learn a range of skills in a simulated work environment. Including the skills and knowledge required to assemble a range of prototype garments using different sewing machines and equipment.


Details of Learning Activities

Learning activities will include workplace simulated practical exercises, tutorials, guest speakers, industry visits, research and project based learning with a focus on:
1. Monitoring the garment quality process
2. Developing quality systems
3. Identifying and evaluating quality issues
4. Recommending appropriate action


Teaching Schedule

Weeks 1-2: Garment 1
Introduction to Quality Assurance and Quality assurance procedures in relation to cut work and sewing. Analyse sample garments and how to identify faults
Weeks 3-5: Garment 2
Implement appropriate quality assurance procedures for this garment including labelling and garment/size measurements. Final quality assessment of finished garment against original sample/s and/or specification requirements before assessment
Weeks 6-8: Garment 3
Implement appropriate quality assurance procedures for this garment including labelling and garment/size measurements. Final quality assessment of finished garment against original sample/s and/or specification requirements before assessment
Weeks 9-11: Garment 4
Implement appropriate quality assurance procedures for this garment including labelling and garment/size measurements. Final quality assessment of finished garment against original sample/s and/or specification requirements before assessment
Introduce Quality Assurance Research Project.

Weeks 12-15: Garment 5 –
Construction and Sewing of a holistic project.
Quality check of Toile and finished patterns prior to cutting.
Implement appropriate quality assurance procedures for this garment including labelling and garment/size measurements. Final quality assessment of finished garment before assessment
Weeks 16-17: Garment 6 –
Implement appropriate quality assurance procedures for this garment including labelling and garment/size measurements. Final quality assessment of finished garment against original sample/s and/or specification requirements before assessment

Overview of Assessment

Tasks that have not been authenticated in class as the student’s own work will not be considered for assessment. REGULAR ATTENDANCE IS NECESSARY
Assessment is based on observation of class work, students demonstrating skills to develop a range of different prototype garments and submission of garment for assessment. Students to demonstrate the skills required to:
• Set-up and use a range of sewing machines and related equipment safely following work specific processes.
• Develop a ranges of prototype garments
• Maintain appropriate documentation for development process according to workroom procedures
