Course Description

This unit covers the skills and knowledge to analyse the fit of a garment or toile on the individual body, making necessary adjustments and altering the pattern over a range of garment types.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Individual body characteristics and unique features are identified and assessed for potential problems in fit.

1.2 Information on individual body characteristics is recorded.

2. Fit garment or toile on individual

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Garment or toile is put on the individual.

2.2 Comfort and fit is discussed with individual.

2.3 Necessary adjustments to garment or toile are made.

2.4 Agreement is reached on adjustments with individual.

2.5 Work schedule is developed with individual for future and final fittings.

3. Make pattern alterations

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Tools and equipment are obtained and prepared for altering patterns.

3.2 Required alterations are recorded.

3.3 Garment or toile alterations are transferred to the pattern.

3.4 Pattern alterations are finalised.

3.5 Final patterns are completed, labelled and checked for accuracy and completeness of all necessary information, to ensure compliance with specifications.

3.6 Patterns are filed and stored.


Learning Outcomes


The unit applies to fitting a range of garments or toiles on an individual person or form and making size and fit alterations on the garment or toile; then transferring these alterations to the pattern.


Details of Learning Activities

The course is integrated with LMTFD5010A Develop and present Design concepts within specific guidelines
and LMTFD4004A Calculate cost estimates for fashion products to form a cluster or learning program called Design Studio 2.

In this course you will be involved in theoretical and practical tasks involved in the development and fit of patterns. This process will be integrated into the following key activities that you are required to undertake 
• research outside of regular class times.
• integrate skills across the design and product development process and focus on the use and experimentation of design studio processes based on fashion industry requirements. This will result in the production of a fashion design product/s which meets specified design briefs

• Introduction to course requirements, attendance, assessment etc.
Industry partner project assessment 1
• Discuss fitting and figure analysis for Industry Project
• Time management strategies.
• Submit Project 1 – Toile, Pattern and Final Garment for assessment and feedback
Out of Class Time.
1.75 hrs per week for pattern development ,toiling and final garment


WEEKS 9 - 15
Introduction to Project requirements
Jeans Project Assessment 2. .
Finalise Project 2 Toile, Pattern and Final Garment
Out of Class Time
1.75 hrs per week for pattern development ,toiling and final garment


WEEK 16
• Submit and present final work including Toile, Pattern and Final Garment for assessment and feedback.

Overview of Assessment

Detailed course and assessment requirements and information will be made available to you first week of class. Specific details will be explained to you during scheduled classes.

This course comprises both practical and theory components. You will be expected to attend and participate in class activities.


As well as class activities you will be required to undertake research and assessment practice outside of regular class times and participate in formal assessment tasks.
