Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to construct special trays to accurately record oral tissues
All procedures are carried out in accordance with occupational health and safety policies and procedures, current infection control guidelines, Australian and New Zealand Standards, State/Territory legislative requirements and organisation policy

2. Select and prepare materials

Performance Criteria:

The Performance Criteria specify the level of performance required to demonstrate achievement of the Element. Terms in italics are elaborated in the Range Statement.
1.1 Read and interpret the prescription
1.2 Block out undesirable undercuts
1.3 Design the custom tray for the client’s dentition and the intended impression material and technique
1.4 Apply spacer material as required

2.1 Select custom tray materials in accordance with the prescription
2.2 Prepare equipment for processing
2.3 Provide appropriate mixing vessels and templates if required

3.1 Apply appropriate separating medium in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions
3.2 Mix or manipulate materials in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions
3.3 Adapt tray material to the model to the pre-determined peripheral outline
3.4 Construct handle and finger rests and attach according to operator requirements
3.5 Process custom tray using the correct method for the correct material
3.6 Separate the tray from the cast in a manner that prevents damage and remove spacer material
3.7 Trim the outline of the tray to shape

4.1 Smooth and refine the peripheries, handle and other surfaces of the tray
4.2 Decontaminate the custom impression tray according to infection control guidelines
4.3 Dry the custom tray and place in a sealed container for dispatch


Learning Outcomes


On completion of this competency the student will have the ability consistently follow safe work practices and apply standard precautions during the construction of custom impression trays.

Overview of Assessment

Practical exercises, presentation of practical competency assessments and theoretical exams are used. 


Assessment Tasks

The assessments in this unit are undertaken in a simulated workplace and under the normal range of work conditions in the form of practical exercises, a practical competency, all of which are to be co-assessed with the following units;
HLTIN301A: Comply with Infection Control,
HLTOHS300A: Contribute to OHS Processes,
BSBCMN302A: Organise Personal Work Priorities,
BSBCMN305A: Organise Workplace Information

All forms of assessments and co-assessed units are to be competently passed to pass this unit.

Weighting of the assessment tasks:

* Practical competency - 50%
* Theoretical exam - 40%
* Reflection on practical activities - 10%
