Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to observe the condition of the client and gather information relevant to the case to enable correct assessment, planning and provision of a remedial massage.

1.1       Establish the client’s purpose for consultation and identify the symptoms experienced

1.2       Determine the client’s eligibility for using clinic/personal policies

1.3       Explain the services able to be provided and the limits of available services clearly

1.4       Explore and clarify the client’s expectation of the service/clinic

1.5       Identify factors likely to have a negative impact on assessment in consultation with the client and implement strategies to minimise the effects of these factors wherever possible

1.6       Ensure personal abilities, level of professional competence and parameters of role are defined to the client and determine practice and at all times

1.7       Refer client to other health care professionals where the needs of the client are identified as beyond the scope of the services able to be provided, or if in the opinion of the practitioner the needs of the client are best met by doing so

1.8  Identify and promote the legal rights of the client

3.1       Ensure informed client consent is obtained prior to conducting tests, in accordance with relevant legislation and regulations

3.2       Allow adequate time during consultation to gather critical information

3.3       Identify and minimise factors that may interfere with the information gathering process

3.4       Identify, establish and routinely observe essential requirements for the maintenance of clinical and practitioner hygiene

3.5       Anticipate potential sensitivities of the client, adapt approach accordingly to take these into account and take steps to ensure the client’s dignity is maintained at all times

3.6       Pursue and investigate abnormal findings in a deliberate, logical and appropriate manner

3.7       Assess reliability of data obtained and establish appropriate clinical correlation with the client’s complaint as soon as possible

3.8  Record all information accurately in a systematic manner in accordance with clinic guidelines

Students will be expected to utilise a range of recent and appropriate library, electronic, text and other resources.
Students will be provided with resources and tools for leaning in this course through myRMIT.
Readings given in class times and relevant literature as it comes to hand are important in order to maintain an up to date knowledge of the industry.


Overview of Assessment

  • Assessment for this course forms part of the Diploma of Remedial Massage.
  • Assessment is typically based around written and/or online tests, assignments, reflective journals, evidence portfolio’s, logbooks and/or practical demonstrations.
  • Assessment may also take place in a simulated work situation such as a supervised student clinic.
  • Competency based training requires the student to be in attendance in order for assessment to be undertaken.
  • Assessment is undertaken through successful completion of all assessment activities and classroom, project & industry participation.
  • Assessments are spaced across the duration of the course, in order for your teacher to provide you with progressive feedback.
  • Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or online discussions, through individual and group feedback on practical exercises and by individual consultation.

Musculoskeletal Anatomy II (MSA 2)

WRITTEN ASSESSMENT:

1.     Written Theory Test – This test will assess knowledge on Anatomy including but not limited to attachments, actions, interrelationship between muscles and regions.

You will have 90 minutes to complete this exam. It will include a range of True & False, Multiple choice, label the diagram and short answer questions.

Pass mark 70%                                                                                                  16th June 2015

PRACTICAL TESTS:

There will be 2 Practical Assessments to assess your ability to apply the skills and knowledge delivered in class. This exam will be conducted in conjunction with the Assessment and Treatment exam.

Students must demonstrate competency in each listed assessment task in order to be deemed satisfactory for this course topic.

Musculoskeletal Pathology (MS Path)

In order to be deemed as satisfactory for this subject, you will be required to complete three, two hour written theoretical tests assessing your essential knowledge of musculoskeletal pathologies. The dates for each written theory test are outlined below:

  • Week 12 - Theory Test 1:  18th March 2015
  • Week 19 - Theory Test 2:  13th May 2015
  • Week 23 -  Theory Test 3:  17th June 2015
  • One Online Theory Test:

In addition, you will also be required to complete one online theory test which will assess your understanding of specific essential knowledge related to musculoskeletal pathologies. The pass mark for this assessment task is 100%. The date for this online theory test is stated below

  • Week 21 – Online Theory Test: 3rd June 2015

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

In order to be deemed satisfactory you will need to perform client assessment history form and perform a full bodied 90min Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) treatment, incorporating the techniques and sequences taught in class.

  • Week 17 – Practical Test : 22 April 2015.

Functional Movement & Corrective Exercise I (FMCE 1)

In order to be deemed satisfactory you will need to demonstrate various tasks learnt within this course topic, within your clinical practice. See clinic checklist.
