Course Description

This course covers the skills and knowledge required to develop and test a textile, clothing and footwear (TCF) product or process to achieve required specifications.

Aim: The aim of this assignment is to for students to prepare and develop initial textiles design concepts via research, through the creation of a body of work capturing inspirational visuals that reflect trends of the current and forthcoming season.

Objectives: Students are to collect sources of inspiration that may inform and contribute to their final product development concepts. This is to be in the form of photos, postcards, catalogues, fabric swatches, magazine tears, coloured yarn and or textured materials. Sketches and notes inspired by the visual materials are to be a part of the diary. The Visual diary must reflect the area that they will be designing/developing product for.

Environmental Scanning
Value: 10 %

1. Collect Magazine, Newspaper, Journal, web articles which discuss current issues in the fashion/textile industry. Articles should cover topics such as, Emerging Textile/Fashion or Homeware brands, Eco fashion/textiles developments, sustainability in fashion and textiles. Textile and fashion “must haves”, and anything that is of interest to you in regards to the current fashion/textiles environment.

Colour Observation
Value: 30 %

1. Source colour forecast projections from at least 2 relevant forecast magazines and 3 online sources, for the current season Winter 2010 and Summer 2010 -11. (forecast can be for fashion/interiors/textiles)
2. Include colours that you observe being promoted in a) bags, b) automobile interiors, c) interiors, d) homewares, - display this in the form of collage pages using fashion magazines, catalogue images, colour sample cards, fabric swatches, accessories and trims, (a minimum of 4 pages)
3. Research colour groupings that you observe in Local Fashion/Textiles/ Homeware Stores (or the area of your choice). Take Photos, or make notes using colour swatch cards to demonstrate the colour stories they are displaying for the current season.
4. Select 3 colours that you feel to be the colours of the season, include a visual page in reference to each colour, displaying images of how some brands are using this colour – in accessories, shoes, clothing.

Value: 30 %

1. Source fabric forecast projections from at least 2 relevant magazines and 3 online sources, for the current season Winter 2010 and Summer 2010 -11. (Textile View, International Textiles, WWD)
2. Research new trends in fabrics for the current and forthcoming season in the area you wish to explore (please confirm with teacher) (either fashion/ homeware/ toys/ etc)
3. Include at least 4 articles on new performance textiles/fabrics, Highlight important points.
4. Include fabrics that you observe being promoted in Fashion, by visiting Stores, and observing editorials. Using swatches and images
5. Dedicate no less than 5 pages on fabrics that you observe being currently used in accessories (shoes, bags, hats, jewellery) Using Swatches and Images

Value: 20 %

1. Track graphic trends that are currently occurring in the fashion/ textiles industry. Demonstrate this using magazine tears, photographs, editorials, photographs, catalogues, web images. At least 3 pages will be needed to demonstrate this.
(for example what are latest graphics in homewares/toys/furniture and or fashion)

Silhouettes / Trend Research
Value: 5 %

1. Track the major Silhouette trends of the season. Display the season’s latest trends, exploring at least 3 different themes, (a minimum of 3 pages)

Brand/ Company Research
Value: 5 %

2. Explore the brand you have selected for your final Development project, include branding, some of their current work, target customer, price proints. Other factors about the brand that may influence your product development

The Visual diary should reflect your chosen area for which you will be developing your mood and range board around. Please ensure there are strong links to this and ensure to explore all areas of your development ideas. There will be marks allocated towards this.

Assessment 1: Mood, Story and Fabric Board 50%

Aim: Mood, Story and Fabric boards are a creative business document used to present ranges as a response to an industry brief via market analysis. This assignment is designed to develop the student’s awareness of these design tools to communicate and sell design concepts to industry personal.

Objective: Students are to create an A2 Mood board, an A2 Story board, A2 Fabric Support board that reflects the research conducted throughout the semester on a company of your choice. Students must present their total concept to the class, including a powerpoint presentation and presentation of actual boards.

1. Prepare an A2 visually articulate mood board that reflects the work included in your Visual Diary. Select a company or brand that you wish to develop a concept for.
2. Respond to the season trend/s that the brand observes when styling the overall collection.
3. Compose an electronic mood board. Which includes no less than 2 images, ensure your mood clearly translates into a trend/theme. Your mood board is to be presented in colour and professionally printed on Cardboard. Images must be High resolution and clear.
4. Include Title of Range and Seasonal Delivery (eg, Summer 2010-11, Winter 2011)

Value 30%

1. Prepare an A2 Story Board which displays the full range of garments/pieces you have developed in relation to the chosen company.
2. Include Range title and Season delivery of range, and company Logo
3. Garment Sketches must be computer generated showing surface interest and all garment detailing, including fastenings, accessories, stitch details, trim applications.
4. Include Front and Back view of each garment, Label Front and Back.
5. Ensure layout of board is Aligned, and neatly arranged
6. Establish a colour palette, using pantone colour codes. Create descriptive titles for the colours which reflect the essence of the mood.
7. Highlight the key garment from the industry partner
8. A range board can be viewed from up to a meter away, consider this when sizing and arranging the board.
9. Develop a Family tree (assortment plan) for your collection. Please include the following information,
*Style Code, *Product Name, *RRP, *Available Colours (using colour boxes and names), *Fabrics, *Size Range

Value 30 %

1. Prepare an A3 Fabric Support board which displays the full range of fabrics used within the range. Source the appropriate textiles and trims which underpin the trends used in your collection. Why these fabrics? Why these trims?
2. Include a swatch (no smaller than 6cm x 10cm) for all garments on your fabric board
3. Include all product accessories -fastenings, print/embroidery applications
4. Ensure Woven/knit fabrics are applied to board (warp/wales in vertical direction)
5. State Fabric name and fibre content
6. Attach fabric 1cm across the top only – this allows fabric to be felt
7. Include appropriate fabric test results.

Linkage between boards- The three boards must work together and be linked through Concepts/Logos/Graphics/Typography/Layout
If your mood board is presented in Portrait format then your range board and support board must follow suit
Logo Synergy – The logo of the brand must be present on every board
Typography/Graphics - What symbols and fonts denote the brand in the market place and how are these symbols used as an overall communication strategy?
Titles/ Delivery Season included on all boards

Create a powerpoint presentation which demonstrates as a group how you came about
the product selections and what trends influenced your final choices for product development

Address the following questions in your presentation
1. “What could have inspired” the industry company in preparation for their range plan, and develop the garment that your group was given, Was it an era, a movie, a person, a trend or gathering sense of an emerging trend?
2. Are the products being developed responding to a gap in the current collection as Indicated by research?
3. Are the products being developed as a response to “product modification” as presented by consumer shifts in tastes and as indicated by research?
4. How do the forecasted trends reflect in the range you are considering
5. Include a snap shot view of your inspiration taken from your visual diary. Images slogans articles etc, which help to justify your direction and choices
6. Describe each article/peice which has been developed within your range, Why this piece? Explain and promote all features and benefits of individual design concepts
7. Justify your colour selection,
8. Why these fabrics? Justify your fabric choices for the items within your range
9. Prepare an assortment matrix which includes every garment within your range, showing – style number, fabric, RRP, colours, size range available,
