Course Description

This course is designed to give you the skills and knowledge required to perform industrial sewing on textile products.

The unit applies to sewing work using an industrial sewing machine. Sewing operations may be performed to repair or finish textile products using a single machine on a limited range of fabrics and textile products.

Performance Criteria:

5.1 Sewn components or textile products are inspected, any faults identified and appropriate action taken and finished pieces are checked against quality standards.
5.2 Results of inspection of finished work are recorded.
5.3 Action taken to reject or correct faulty work is recorded.
5.4 Preventative action taken to avoid any recurrence of defective work is recorded.
5.5 Production records and packing slips are completed.
5.6 Completed work is directed to the next operation or packing section.

2.4 Machines are set up and adjusted according to specifications for the work.
2.5 Needles, attachments and/or parts are checked and worn needles and/or parts are identified and reported or replaced, according to manufacturer instructions.

Performance Criteria:


3.1 The performance of the machine is regularly checked for signs of faulty operation, including evidence from the inspection of finished work and required action taken.

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Sewing is conducted according to requirements for operations.
4.2 Quality standards are met.
4.3 Sewing is conducted according to OH&S practices and the requirements for the speed of work.
4.4 Machine speed and work handling are controlled for the type of operations, fabrics and product type.
 


Learning Outcomes


On successful completion of this course you will have developed and applied the skills and knowledge to demonstrate competency in the above elements.This course is a workshop based course. Students will undetake a number of technical exercises that enable them to perform industrial sewing.

Week 1

Lock Stitch Sewing Machine Operation
Thread machine
Insert/Remove needle and foot. Set up and wind bobbin
Threading and inserting the bobbin case

Introduction to OH&S Blackboard
Revise Basic Machine Safety and Safety signs.

Demonstration /discussion tension and stitch length adjustments.
Machine Cleaning – Notes and activity
Students to test own machine and make own sample of correct tension/stitch length before proceeding. SAMPLERS (PRE-CUT)

• Task 2: Endless band (½ foot and foot width sewing) with thread x1

Overview of Assessment

Assessment is ongoing throughout the course and students will be asked to demonstrate their competency. Assessment will be done by observation and by questioning by the assessor. Assessment tasks have been designed to measure competency in a flexible manner. To achieve successful completion of this course students must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of competency.


Students will be awarded a grade only if competency has been demonstrated within the standard enrolment period on the first assessment attempt.
Units assessed as ‘not yet competent’ on a first assessment attempt and ‘competent’ on a second or subsequent attempt are to have results amended to competent but are not eligible for grading.

All work must be submitted by the due date.

Late submission will not be graded higher than a PASS.

Other Information

It is an OHS requirement that students must wear flat fully covered shoes in the workshops.

NO SANDALS  OR THONGS

Long hair should be tied back and Jewelley that could pose a possible hazard must be removed.
