Details of Learning Activities
This is a studio based course covering both theory and practical aspects of planning production processes.
Individual and group projects will be undertaken and will develop skills to:
- participate effectively in planning production
- interpret and use data from a range of sources
- communicate effectively with individuals, work groups and supervisors
- document and transfer information
- read, interpret and follow information on work specifications, standard operating
- procedures and work instructions, and other reference material
- maintain accurate records
- meet specifications
- clarify and check task-related information
- carry out work according to OHS practices
Teaching Schedule
Sessions are delivered across a 16 week period and are clustered with the Unit; MANU5914C Contribute to the Development of Products or Processes. Learning activities are common to both Units. Specific details on breakdown of assessment will be provided in first class.
Weekly Schedule:
1 Introduction to Course Outline. OH&S for Print/Knit/Weave/Digital Labs & studios. PROJECT: PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT_Identify product specifications for samples.
_Introduction to Course Outline_Project Briefs_OH&S Induction_Introduction to Production Plans _Overview of Production: Prepare, Plan and Produce a Product. ^NOTE: students are required to supply and manage own materials for production.
2 PROJECT: PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT ¬ Conduct trials¬_ Develop a series of samples, including: Selecting appropriate materials to meet requirements & ensure equipment set up ready for sample development. Participate in Production Planning Session: Production Plan briefing.
3 PROJECT: Participate in feasibility studies _Develop the samples identifying original design specifications. ASSESSMENT: PREPARE A PRODUCTION PLAN & TIMELINE
4 PROJECT: PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT _Develop the samples, including: Selecting appropriate materials to meet requirements & according to specifications.
5 PROJECT: PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT _Results of the trials are analysed to determine performance and acceptability for production.
6 PROJECT: PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT _ Gather specific production information
7 PROJECT: PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT _Production development & Finishing and Testing

Project: Assist in developing or engineering product
10 Project: PROJECT DESIGNER_MANUFACTURE. Continue with Project Addressing Product Specifications, Quantities, Equipment Used. Prepare, Plan and Produce a Product.
11 Project: PROJECT DESIGNER_MANUFACTURE. Interpret provisional specifications.
12 Project: PROJECT DESIGNER_MANUFACTURE. Undertake production. Maintain records
13 Project: PROJECT DESIGNER_MANUFACTURE
Undertake production for Small Production Run. Report results and maintain records
14 Project: PROJECT DESIGNER_MANUFACTURE
Follow own production plan to produce samples & Finished Product.

Overview of Assessment
To achieve successful completion of this course students must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of competency.
Assessment tasks have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner.
Students will be awarded a grade only if competency has been demonstrated within the standard enrolment period on the first assessment attempt.
Units assessed as ’not yet competent’ on a first assessment attempt and ’competent’ on a second or subsequent attempt are to have results amended to competent but are not eligible for grading.
Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher.
All work must be submitted by the due date. Late submission will not be graded higher
Assessment Tasks
PRODUCTION PLAN - 30% DUE WEEK 4
Prepare a Production Plan that includes the following:
1.Identify your project outcome and rationale based on market research. This will be a written statement of proposed outcome/s and should make reference to current trends (approx. 150 words).
2.1 A4 page (minimum) of visuals in the form of: concept board or sketches or visual references
3.Breakdown of tasks for all stages including prototype and manufacture: Provide chronological and detailed notes on individual tasks and Identify deadlines– some tasks will need to be done before others can be started, while some tasks will overlap. Other tasks will run for the whole project. Identify a timeframe for each task (detail how many days will the individual task take to complete?)This also must include OH&S considerations
4.Include a separate list of resources including:
•Equipment requirements for each process (Including digital processes and outsourcing)
•Material requirements
•Workspace requirements
•Suppliers list (wholesale and retail)
•Technical assistance
•Outsourced labour (patternmaking/garment construction/finishing)
5.Personal weekly timetable indicating all commitments; including RMIT, employment and leisure/social/family. This will give you a realistic break down of ACTUAL hours available for completing and organising tasks.
6.A weekly planner that includes condensed information gathered from points 3-5. This will be your working document for meeting deadlines and using time effectively. It should reflect a realistic timeframe for both studio and self-directed hours from week 2-15. It must be in a table format and include all important key dates.
CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF PRODUCTION PROCESSES – 30% DUE WEEK 15
You will prepare a critical analysis of production processes that includes:
1.Design, sampling and production processes
Insightfully reflect on your production processes by describing and analysing them in detail.
Evaluate the technical and aesthetic characteristics of selected techniques & materials
2.Actions taken as a result of Industry review meeting
Reflect on decision making after the Industry critique and discuss how the feedback related to your final body of work.
3.Accuracy of projected weekly planner and effectiveness of plan in assisting meeting deadlines and achieving desired outcomes
Realistically and thoughtfully discuss the effectiveness of your planning.
4.Troubleshooting/ problem solving/challenges
Demonstrate evidence of complex problem solving through progressively refining your techniques, methods, approach and material use.
5.Quality of final body of work & its relationship to original design goals
Identify aspects of your final body of work that demonstrate excellence in craftsmanship, finishing and presentation.
Thoroughly analyse and evaluate how well your project was realised and insightfully explain your conclusions
