Course Description

This course is designed to give you the skills and knowledge to use a range of computer based design programs, equipment and computing technology to generate, produce and manufacture computer aided designs for textile products.

Details of Learning Activities

 

This unit is delivered in a CAD studio.  The course covers all aspects of using computer based design programs to produce textile designs. 

Individual and group projects will be undertaken in a simulated design studio environment.
The learning and assessment is delivered as an integrated learning program reflecting industry practices Students should be enrolled in a total of three units as listed below to maximise their learning outcomes.
This course is delivered concurrently with the following units
LMTTD5008A Develop textile designs and specifications
and one from the following
LMTTD5003A Design and Produce Woven Products
LMTTD5005A Design and Produce Knitted Textile Products
LMTTD5001A Design and Produce Printed Textiles

TECHNICAL PROJECT (8 WEEKS)
Week 1
TECHNICAL PROJECT
Introduction to specified design software. Digital Record Keeping.
OH&S Practice for CAD Studio.
Week 2
Design conversion using specified CAD design programs. Identify product considerations.
Programming design in specified software to meet technical & production specifications.
Week 3 - Week 8 
Design Development & modification of designs using specified software, outcomes generated to specific program and equipment
Assessment: Technical Workbook

DESIGN PROJECT (8 WEEKS)
Week 9
DESIGN PROJECT
Overview of Design Brief. Identify Design Brief and translate design appropriate to production requirements using specified software.
Create artwork and designs using specified software.
Week 10
Modify design to meet technical specifications using specified software.
Generate output to meet production requirements.
Week 11
Test design using design program and equipment and present outputs to supervisor.
Week 12
Modify designs and prepare for production.
Week 13
Production specifications tested.
Week 14 - 16
Design storage and archiving. Technical file data recorded.

Students are asked to provide the following:

- Portable Hard-drive or USB drive
- folio with plastic sleeves for presentation of hard copy printouts of digital design work
- A4 folder & notebook to be used as a Technical Workbook
- Ruled Notebook & pen for recording notes during class exercises.


Overview of Assessment

Assessment tasks have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner.

Assessment will incorporate a variety of methods including recording all technical documentation in a workbook, exercises completed in class, exercises completed outside class times, producing of a folio of digital designs and observational checklists completed by the class teacher during class exercises.

Students will be awarded a grade only if competency has been demonstrated within the standard enrolment period on the first assessment attempt.

Units assessed as ‘not yet competent’ on a first assessment attempt and ‘competent’ on a second or subsequent attempt are to have results amended to competent but are not eligible for grading.

Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher.
All work must be submitted by the due date. Late submission will not be graded higher than a PASS.

Portfolio of Digital Designs - students develop a range of digital designs, these are presented as
an online digital portfolio or  printed for presentation in a folio/workbook.  graded assessment

Technical Workbook - students record all documentation processes and technical specifications in
a workbook. This workbook is submitted at the end of semester.  graded assessment

This course is run in a studio environment, to comply with Occupational Health & Safety
standards students are required to wear sturdy footwear with covered toe protection.
