This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to contribute to developing products or processes within the workplace.

Learning Outcomes
Students undertaking this unit will develop and apply technical skills associated with checking and selecting raw materials, interpreting specifications and carry out sampling. In addition organisational skills will be developed such as establishing availability of machines, determining availability of required skills and personnel, selecting, interpreting and evaluating procedures or processes, sequencing operations, reading and following work specifications, standard operating procedures, work instructions and other reference materials. The student will learn how to communicate within the workplace and clarify and check task-related information from documents or other personnel and maintain accurate records.
Details of Learning Activities
This is a studio based course covering both theory and practical aspects of the development of processes & products relating to textile design.
Individual and group projects will be undertaken in a fully equipped studios using equipment suitable for sample and production, the studio is a simulated industry environment.
Upon completion of the sampling and finished product your work is presented to a panel of industry peers for review & feedback.
Teaching Schedule
1 Introduction to Course Outline. OH&S for Print/Knit/Weave studio_PROJECT: SAMPLE & PRODUCTION DEVELOPMENT_Identify product specifications for samples.
2 PROJECT: SAMPLE & PRODUCTION DEVELOPMENT_Develop a series of samples, including: Selecting appropriate materials to meet requirements & ensure equipment set up ready for sample development.
3 PROJECT: SAMPLE & PRODUCTION DEVELOPMENT_Develop the samples identifying original design specifications
4 PROJECT: SAMPLE & PRODUCTION DEVELOPMENT_Develop the samples, including: Selecting appropriate materials to meet requirements & according to specifications.
5 PROJECT: SAMPLE & PRODUCTION DEVELOPMENT_Results of the trials are analysed to determine performance and acceptability for production.
6 PROJECT: SAMPLE & PRODUCTION DEVELOPMENT_Proceed to Production from samples

KNIT: Wool needle, scissors, glass headed or steel dressmaking pins, tape measure, calculator
WEAVE: shuttle sticks, darning needles, tape measure, scissors, calculator, graph paper, portable USB drive

Finished Product: A final Body of Work based on the production goals for the final semester’s work.

This course is run in a workshop environment, to comply with Occupational Health & Safety standards students are required to wear sturdy footwear with covered toe protection.
