This course has no prerequisites however students will be expected to undetake OHS inductions in practical workshops offered in the Diploma

Course Description


This unit applies to implementing and monitoring OHS policies and procedures within a work area where discretion and judgement may be required, for both self and others, in planning and selecting processes, procedures or outcomes. Work may be conducted in a variety of environments such as:
• operational workplace activities
• restricted spaces
• hazardous, controlled or exposed conditions
• day or night operations

1. Provide information to the work group about OHS policies, procedures and programs

Performance Criteria:

1.1Relevant provisions of OHS legislation and codes of practice are accurately and clearly explained to the work group
1.2Information on workplace OHS policies, procedures and programs is provided in a readily accessible manner, and is accurately and clearly explained to the work group
1.3Information about identified hazards and the outcomes of risk assessment and risk control procedures is regularly provided, and is accurately and clearly explained to the work group

Performance Criteria:

2.1Workplace practices for consultation over OHS issues are implemented and monitored to ensure that all members of the work group have the opportunity to contribute

2.3The outcomes of consultation over OHS issues are made known to the work group promptly

4.3Inadequacies in existing risk control measures are identified in accordance with the hierarchy of control and reported to designated personnel
4.4Inadequacies in resource allocation for implementation of risk control measures are identified and reported to designated personnel

Performance Criteria:

5.1Workplace procedures for dealing with hazardous events are implemented whenever necessary to ensure that prompt control action is taken
5.2Hazardous events are investigated to identify their cause in accordance with investigation procedures
5.3Control measures to prevent recurrence and minimise risks of hazardous events are implemented based on the hierarchy of control (if within scope of responsibilities and competencies) or referred to designated personnel for implementation

Performance Criteria:

6.1OHS training needs are identified accurately, specifying gaps between OHS competencies required and those held by work group members

On completion of this unit students will be able to demonstrates skills to:


• analyse the work environment in order to identify hazards, assess risks and judge when intervention to control risks is necessary
• analyse relevant workplace data to identify hazards, assess risks and evaluate the effectiveness of risk control measures
• assess the resources needed to apply different risk control measures and make recommendations to management on that basis
• read, interpret and follow information on work specifications, standard operating procedures and work instructions and other reference material

Navigating the RMIT website to become familiar with health and safety policies and procedures that relate to students’ working environment

Analysis of risk assessments and Material Safety Data Sheets

Develop an OH&S quiz in groups

Students will undertake a risk assessment in a studio, classroom or workplace and write a brief report on findings

Details of Learning activities and assessment tasks will be provided in class


Teaching Schedule

Week 1:  What is OH&S? Why is it important? Introduction to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, policies and procedures, codes of practise, rights and responsibilities. 

Class discussion . Navigation of RMIT website and OHS policies that may impact on practise.

Week 2:  Implement and monitor systems in the workplace for controlling risks.

What is Risk Assessment  - Analysing  risk assessment forms and material safety data sheets, how are they used and interpreted, the role they play identifying and minimising risks or hazardous events.

Week 3:  OH&S quiz.. In small groups develop a quiz that is relevant to your workspace. It can include manual handling, chemical safety, work environment, eg noise, slips, temperature, machine safety, policies and safe working instructions.

Week 4: Students to undertake a risk assessment.

Students are expected to implement  their understanding of OHS in every scheduled class session .

Overview of Assessment


To achieve successful completion of this course students must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of Competency.
Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of each element in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks.
Assessment will incorporate a variety of methods including technical requirements documentation, homework and in class exercises, written tests, practical problem solving exercises and practical tests.

Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.


Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1: Quiz-

In groups students will develop an OH&S quiz. The quiz can cover the areas of hazards, chemicals, manual handling, work environment or other health and safety policies and procedures. 

Assessment Task 2: Risk Assessment  

In small groups students will undertake a risk assessment in a studio, classroom or workplace.  You will be provided with an actual risk assessment form and your report should provide background information about the area, including its general use or uses, how many users access the space at any one time, location, general layout, this may include a map or floor plan.

Please note this unit is graded as Competent or Not Yet Competent. Both assessment tasks must be completed at a satisfactory level to receive a competent grade.

Late submission:
Students requiring extensions for 7 calendar days or less (from the original due date) must complete and lodge an Application for Extension of Submittable Work (7 Calendar Days or less) form and lodge it with the Senior Educator/ Program Manager.
The application must be lodged no later than one working day before the official due date. The student will be notified within no more than 2 working days of the date of lodgement as to whether the extension has been granted.
Students seeking an extension of more than 7 calendar days (from the original due date) must lodge an Application for Special Consideration form under the provisions of the Special Consideration Policy, preferably prior to, but no later than 2 working days after the official due date.
Assignments submitted late without approval of an extension will not be accepted or marked.
