Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course you will have developed and applied the skills and knowledge required to demonstrate competency in the above elements. In addition, you will have developed the skills required to create digital visual effects and titles for a screen based production.

Details of Learning Activities

This class is conducted as a blended course with a number of face to face sessions (weeks 2, 6, 10 and 14), and the balance of learning and assessment activities conducted online. You will complete learning and assessment tasks either individually, or collaboratively with your peers.

Students are required to make extensive use of the Lynda.com database and associated University library facilities, in researching and developing digital imaging, graphic and motion graphic design skills and techniques. Structured learning resources for this blended course can be found in the c5218 Diploma of Interactive Digital Media Blackboard Shell.

You will begin with a training needs analysis quiz. This quiz covers aspects of film and video, software authoring tools and some general design knowledge. The result indicates your understanding of concepts that are crucial skills for this course. At the completion of the course, you should be able to score full points.

Your quiz score will indicate whether you should access the basic, intermediate or advanced learning resources provided online. Of course whatever the result, you have access to all the learning material and it is highly recommended that every student should review each lesson.

Two of your assessments will be individually animated short films. Another two assessments will be team projects conducted collaboratively, using online tools (discussion boards, web conferencing, wikis, blogs etc.) to develop a concept for an animated film, and an online research resource.

Students are encouraged to make full use of University computer lab resources. You are advised to look at the course Blackboard page for ongoing updated information.

In class learning activities may include, but are not limited to:
* lectures
* peer teaching and class presentations
* group discussion
* teacher feedback
* online research
* independent project based work
* teacher directed group activities/projects
* work shopping of students? own projects

Out of class activities may include, but are not limited to
* online research
* work shopping
* independent project based work

Overview of Assessment

Assessment tasks include ongoing class exercises and design and development of various animated/composited projects

Assessment Tasks

Assessment tasks in this course are either formative or summative. Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered as essential building blocks for the more substantial summative assessment tasks.
To demonstrate competency in this course, you will need to complete each one of the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback on all assessments and a grade for the summative assessments.

Formative Assessments

1. Simple Shapes Graphic Animation with Title
Demonstrate your ability to creatively animate 15 secs of basic transformations in After Effects, using only
the supplied graphic elements. Due in week 6.

2. Team Concept Design
In teams, plan, design and visualise a 30 sec motion graphic animation with titles. Due in week 10.

3. Team Motion Graphic Wiki
In teams, contribute to a group motion graphic research resource. Due in week 14.

Summative Assessment

1. 30 sec Motion Graphic Animation with Title
Create a 30 sec motion graphic animation with titles. Using the skills and techniques you have acquired over the semester, creatively illustrate the specified theme. Due in week 16.
