Course Description
This unit covers the skills and knowledge to assist with research and preparation of initial garment design concepts.

Learning Outcomes
In this unit you will be required to demonstrates skills and knowledge to:
• research trends
• assess technical requirements
• develop story themes
and then interpret this information into preliminary design concepts for garments.
This will involve creation, or adaptation of designs and interpretation of sketches within a range of design contexts.
Design may relate to individual garments or small ranges depending on the design criteria given to you as part of you class work.
Details of Learning Activities
• You will follow a design brief, designing an original, small range of garments based on a specific, researched theme.
• You will meet with the teacher for feedback at critical check points in the planned timeline.
• As well as class activities you will be required to undertake research and development time outside class to meet the learning requirements of this course.
Teaching Schedule
Week 1-2 Fashion figure drawing and development. checkpoint 1
Week 3-4 Timeline/ critical path. checkpoint 2
Week 5 Design a small range’ brief. Plan theme, research and design process. Progress checkpoint 3
Week 7-8 Explore colour, fabric and trims as relevant to the theme. Demonstrate design concepts and fabric selection in visual diary.
Week 9-10 Develop fabric enhancement and fashion drawings for peer presentation. Peer presention checkpoint 4
Week 11-15 Complete design selection and make final fashion drawings and illustrations as required for class presentation and submission.
Week 14 Feedback on progress Checkpoint 5
Week 15 Class presentation and final submission of small range.

Equipment and materials required in class are layout pad, HB pencil, fine line black pen, text book, layout paper and cartidge paper and media such as markers and gouache paints.
Overview of Assessment
Detailed course and assessment requirements and information will be made available to you first week of class. Specific details will be explained to you during scheduled classes.
This course comprises both practical and theory components. You will be expected to attend and participate in class activities.
As well as class activities you will be required to undertake research and assessment practice outside of regular class times and participate in formal assessment tasks.
PLEASE NOTE: work that has not been authenticated during class as your own work will not be considered for assessment.

Ungraded Assessment: Checkpoints x 5
Graded Assessment: Final presentation of brief; boards, visual diary and sample
Checkpoint 1 Fashion figure development,
Checkpoint 2 Time line/critical path to achieve Small Range brief
Checkpoint 3 Individual presentation of Design Concept theme, colour/ fabric and design selection to the teacher
Checkpoint 4 Peer presention of work in progress
Checkpoint 5 Progress on fashion drawing and illustrations
Final submission of Small Range consisting of range boards/book with mood and colourways /fabric, 5 outfits illustrated, fashion drawings, design specifications, and fabric palette and visual diary
