Course Description

This unit covers the skills and knowledge to use a range of electronic design programs and equipment such as software programs and computing technology used in the fashion industry.

Learning Outcomes


In this unit you will develop the skills and knowledge required to the creation of designs, patterns or production specifications using electronic programs and equipment such as graphic and design software, computers and peripherals, and specialised equipment.


Details of Learning Activities

The learning activities will consist of a series of practical demonstrations and simulated activities on PCs.
Learners will build on existing skills in computer aided design processes. Activities are designed to enable learners to interpret garment designs, then to develop accurate diagrams according to the principles of good fit and clothing production specifications.
Learners will produce a range of accurate technical drawings.
All work must be authenticated by regular class participation.

Introduction to course
Familiarisation with CAD working environment
Revision exercises

Week 2 – 7:
Preliminary class exercises to build CAD skills and CAD libraries

Week 8 – 10:
Assessment task: Mini garment design task
To be finalised and submitted at end of week 10

Week 11 – 15:
Assessment task: Catalogue of garment range
To be finalised and submitted at end of week 15

Overview of Assessment

Detailed course and assessment requirements and information will be made available to you first week of class. Specific details will be explained to you during scheduled classes.

This course comprises both practical and theory components within a computer laboratory setting. You will be expected to attend and participate in class activities.


As well as class activities you will be required to undertake research and assessment practice outside of regular class times and participate in formal assessment tasks.


PLEASE NOTE: work that has not been authenticated during class as your own work will not be considered for assessment.

3. Catalogue - Graded Assessment (70%)

Successful completion of this course requires that you demonstrate you have the underpinning knowledge and skills to consistently perform tasks associated with the use of electronic tools and equipment and software programs (e.g. Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop).
Completing all of the assessment activities is essential to cover the range of skills required for each element of this competency.
