Course Description

This unit covers the skills and knowledge to assemble a prototype garment using commercial machines.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Relevant information on design elements is collected and
organised.
1.2 Work pieces are prepared according to design concept.
1.3 Pattern pieces are laid out and attached to the fabric to
match fabric pattern, nap and weave.
1.4 Garment components are laid out according to sequence
of assembly operations.
1.5 Workbench and seating are set up according to OHS
practices .
1.6 Machines are set up and adjusted according to
specifications for work.

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Components are assembled according to OHS practices,
and accepted garment assembly techniques .
2.2 Garment is checked for sizing and appearance.
2.3 Garment is adjusted to better display design
characteristics and correct fabric alignment, garment fitting
and other features.

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Required hand sewing and finishing is undertaken
according to design concept requirements.
3.2 Garment is pressed according to fabric requirements and
garment construction details.
3.3 Quality and impact of finished garment is checked against
original design concept.
3.4 Assembly issues are noted and communicated to
appropriate personnel .


Learning Outcomes


Students will learn a range of skills in a simulated work environment. Including the skills and knowledge required to assemble a range of prototype garments using different sewing machines and equipment.


Details of Learning Activities

This course is integrated with LMTFD4011B Cut Fabric for Prototype Designs and LMTFD4007B Conduct Quality assurance for garments to form a cluster called ‘Production Prototypes.’

PLANNED LEARNING EXPERIENCES – SEW DESIGN PROTOTYPES

1. Trainer assisted use of self-paced learning materials
2. Observation tasks during which learners observe garment assembly processes.
3. Safety procedures and practices: demonstrations and practice in making safe use of materials and equipment.
4. Examination of specification formats and practice in developing assembly plans
5. Machine set-ups including doing adjustments to settings; needle and thread type selection by comparing the characteristic of different fabrics
6. Receiving work-pieces; practice in handling work correctly including participation in a production run such as a Just in Time activity.
7. Doing quality checks: activities in identification of faults by reference to specifications and procedures for correcting faults
8. Giving and receiving relevant information; activities related to record keeping procedures
Garment construction practice relating to sewing operations and techniques for preparing and assembling whole garments according to specifications and timelines.


Teaching Schedule

Nominal Hours: 60 hours which includes 16 hours of outside class activity consisting of 1 hour per week to complete assembly plans and garment construction.

Teaching Schedule

Weeks 1-3: Garment 1 -Complex Garment Construction.

Weeks 4-6: Garment 2 - Complex Garment Construction and sewing including Sampler.

Weeks7-8: Garment 3 - Complex Garment Construction and sewing with knitted fabric.

Weeks9-11: Garment 4 – Complex Garment Construction. 

Weeks 12-15: Garment 5 - Complex Garment Construction and sewing of a holistic project.

Week 16: Presentation.

Overview of Assessment
